Lots of bills , so a fund raiser event was held
A donation supper & auction of donated items
I cooked 130# of pork butts & donated $ time
After the meal was served the auction started
The bidding was fierce
A friend of mine who has deep pockets was bidding on stuff
He & his boys went to K-STATE College
So any item that was K-STATE he bought .. price didn't matter
So the last big item , a metal outside chair
Painted K-STATE purple & power-cat design was going to go high
(The chair was built by leeroy Douglas , the shop we visited SS salina)
These chairs sell for around $150 normally
The bidding started at at a $100
Then $150
Then $200
$250 , $300 , $350 .... then it kinda stalled (the other deep pocket man had enough)
Now let me remind you .... I play cards with my friend with the deep pockets
I had some cash in my pocket ... planned on buying an old truck (fell thru)
So I bid $400.... nobody knew who was bidding except a few & auctioneer
$450.... $500...$550....$600.....
Now he REALLY WANTED to know who was bidding against him
Auctioneer wouldn't tell him
Deep pockets said "I will bid one last time "
I knew that was BS
$650...$700...$750...$800
Deep pockets is really eyeballing the crowd
It is frustrating because all the big spenders are shaking their head no
$850 .... $900....
He stops bidding ... my knees are shaking a bit ... I can feel a little nervous
It's for a good cause. ...I tell myself
Deep pockets says $910 , last bid
Auctioneer looks at me ... $920 ? (Im barely moving my hand & to motion yes)
It gets even smaller increments ... I know what deep pockets is doing
Finally deep pockets bids it to a $1000
That's my key... I know the difference between dumb & stupid
"Let him have it !" I say
The crowd laughed , but we applauded deep pockets for his generosity
After counting out all sales & donations ... over $10,000 dollars
Not bad for a town of 400 people
