I hate this stuff ... and it shows

Post by slick4x4 »

Body work ....

I do admire guys that can take a rust bucket & turn it into a show winner
They cut out & replace precise pieces
Weld up gaps & fill with sealer
Then work the metal until it's smoother than factory
Prime sand sand sand ....

Me ?
I try to get the holes the cats can climb thru plugged up
A coat of paint so everything is the same color ....

I've done a fair amount of bodywork. Mostly the metal part as the journeyman did most of the filler work. I think some of the frustration comes from the fact that it can never be perfect. You could put a 5000 dollar job or a 50 000 dollar job on the same car. That means especially for the guy at home your cutting something short and that's frustrating. I've had a long term project that I never finished because I wanted it perfect and when it wasn't I got frustrated.

just my :2cents:

You're talking about my world Pat. I started working in body shops in 1967 and I'm still at it. I've never really worked at it full time but my version of part time was about 30 hrs a week on top of my regular job. You just have to convince yourself that you're not building a show car because unless you're a millionaire you can't drive a vehicle at that level of quality and what fun is that? Don't let the idea that it has to be perfect keep you from finishing a project and getting the chance to drive it and enjoy it. I love doing body work and paint but I have to admit it was a lot easier a few years ago when I wasn't considered a senior citizen. lol. Pat, as long you get those holes down to where only a small kitten can get through you're good to go. :D

The difference is, you get to have yours drive able and enjoying it before I will, and sometime I start questioning whether I should just go ahead and put it back together and drive it.

Me? I'm Mr. Rustoleum paint job....
Drive it to Lowes and haul a load of lumber....
Drive it to the gravel pit and haul a load of 57 gravel...
Wash it and go to the local cruise-ins....get as many "oooh's" and "ahhhh's" as the guy parked next to me with the "trailer queen"

It's all about enjoying and having fun with our trucks. It sounds like that's what you're doing Steve and with that new garage it's even better. :rocker:

Here’s my way....
1) Paint...Rust O leum and a roller
2) Cab mounts....put’em with screws
3) Door seals.....foam in a can
4) Stereo....Blue tooth speaker and an iPod
5) Rusty floor boards.....throw some cardboard over them
6) Seat cover......live with it,it’s only original once
7) Engine and drive train....spend whatever it needs to keep it on the road....
Works for me and they still get the ooohs and aaaahhs...

Well it sounds like the cat is out of the bag
A few of us admitting we cut some corners

I see nothing wrong with using low cost paint like rustoleum
I painted the bumper on my 61 in 2008 with white rustoleum
Still looks darn good & will shine up with a wax job
