Re: Steve's 64 Short-bed Project
This is what my 15 year old grandson, Zack, (and I) have been working on this week....a replica of Charlotte Motor Speedway. From cardboard....
He also did a "stop motion" video of the cars racing around the track...

Hey Steve, your truck is looking good. I have not tackled any body work, looks like you are getting good at it.

Re: Steve's 64 Short-bed Project
Thanks Jeff...I have been at a standstill for the past week or so with my grandson visiting. My intention was to get him out in the garage and put him to work helping me with the truck. We've build a replica Nascar track instead...and played some golf. Anyway, I'm hoping to get back on it this upcoming week...JeffinMooresville wrote:Hey Steve, your truck is looking good. Re: Steve's 64 Short-bed Project
I got busy yesterday evening and today. Shot some black on the inner bedsides and inner tailgate. I purchased some items to make a tonneau cover for the bed. I'll post on that as I build it if anyone is interested. The cost is coming in at less than $100. I spent $70 at Lowes today for aluminum channel and and a hinge and some OSB. I have to pick up some heavy vinyl to cover it with...
I will probably start on the tonneau cover install tomorrow....pics to follow.
Stay tuned...

Re: Steve's 64 Short-bed Project
I built a hard cover a few years ago and used bedliner to cover it instead of vinyl.

Re: Steve's 64 Short-bed Project
Good Idea! I shot some black paint on the OSB to see how it would look....which I already knew, lol. Not good. Anyway, here's pics of the aluminum "frame" for the cover. I am going to slide the piece at the front of the bed into the channel and it will be fixed and held in place by the channel. The back 1/3 of the cover will be hinged and will lay on the L shaped aluminum. I will use 'barrel slide locks' to hold the back part closed. The cover will be flush with the top edge of the bed for a sleeker look. Here's the pics...04sd wrote:I built a hard cover a few years ago and used bedliner to cover it instead of vinyl.

I'm letting the paint dry inside the bed and then tomorrow I will screw the decking boards down and start building the cover.
Stay tuned.....

I think you will need something to stiffen the plywood across the center or it will sag.

Re: Steve's 64 Short-bed Project
Thanks! It was fairly easy to construct...the only problem was that my bed was not perfectly square (go figure) so I has to trim the board a "tad" to get it to fit like I wanted. I'm hoping to purchase some black vinyl today to cover it. I also thought about covering the wood part with some thin (maybe 22 gauge) metal. Then I can paint it....MY OL 66 wrote:I like it!!!

Re: Steve's 64 Short-bed Project
Here's the process...cover the large front piece in vinyl:
Install on the truck....
Cover the smaller back piece....forgot to take pic of this part...(but you get the idea, lol) Then set it on the truck...
Then paint the silver hinge....black rattle can...
Screw the hinge down...along with the "anti-sag" hardware that you can't see...
Stand back and enjoy....
I am going to buy a piece of c-channel for the back edge at the tailgate. I had a short piece left over that I stuck on there for the time being.
Stay tuned....

Thanks!mac wrote:That truck looks really good! Nice work.
I took some time and painted up the passenger door that I replaced. I am going to let it dry and then 'age' it. I will become wall art in my garage...
I've been wanting to 'logo' the doors on my truck for awhile. This might end up on the truck...
Stay tuned....
