Horn Question

Post by Mr. Jones »

I've set a new goal and it might be impossible,I just don't know....I haven't had a horn that worked since my first Slick back in the early 80's......so my question is how the hell do get these things to honk!!!
I'd like to hear from someone that's done it. And how you did it.....

And Pat don't tell me to press the horn ring...
Thanks
Mr.Jones, all is good in KC..

the horn uses a relay
the wire that goes up through the column is NOT "hot"
it just needs to be grounded
when its grounded , the relay is energized
then the relay proveds power to the horn
it gets grounded when you PUSH THE HORN RING

Yes that's the relay.
It should have one wire hot(12v) all the time.
One wire leads to the horn or horns.
The third should go up the horn button.

Pull that rubber plug off the relay, and test for power. No power on at least one of the connections, theres a problem...
Jump12v direct to the horn connection. ( Horn should blow). If not check the horn itself...

Now, when we know the relay has power and the horn will work, all that is left is the (ground /signal wire that feeds up to the horn button. Ground that wire and Either the relay will work and the horn blow, or you will need a new relay...

here is a simplified picture
12 volts goes to the relay
ground wire goes to the column
wire going to horn gets power when column wire gets grounded
the terminals on my relay pic are just guesses,
not sure which one is power/ground/switched power
hope this helps

Make sure column is grounded through the rag joint.
If it cain't be fixed with a sledge hammer it must be an electrical problem!

Also make sure you only have about 1/16 of an inch gap between the steering wheel and the top of the
column. Many times a weak cab mount will allow the cab overtime to drop down, which causes the steering shaft
to rise upward. A wide gap will not let the horn contact in the turn signal switch make contact with the
bottom of the steering wheel.....which will keep the horn from functioning properly.
