Cab Removal

I'm going to remove my cab this weekend, my question is if the doors are off do I need to worry about warping in any way?

If you have some help to lift it off you shoudn't have a problem I did'nt

This is how I lifted my cab. It was easy, still needed help but the chain hosts did all the work. Finding the center was fun and someone still needed to hold to the cab to keep the balance but eveything else was good. I'm sure with more time I could of made a better bracket to help solve the centering problem. The bracket bolted to the seat holes.

I ran a 4x4 across the inside roof to the door frames, and used an engine hoist on the bottom of the 4x4. Had a notch in the middle of the 4x4 so the chain link didn't slip off. Takes some fooling to find the center, but it worked slick. Others are worried that this method will warp your door frames so beware. I had no problems. Make sure the doors are off.

i have done it several different ways, with or without the doors.

1. running a big strap thru the doors with the windows down or just the roof if doorless and lifting straight up with comealong from a beam in my barn. this i call exercise.

2. the towtruck method, same as above but not as physical.

3. slideback. backed up to the bedless truck , moved the deck to the correct position and tipped the cab on its back on the deck , pulled forward , angled the deck to the ground and tipped it back upright. i used the winch and a strap to keep it from falling or sliding off when tilting the deck.

4. conveyor rollers.
put new frame next to old, lift cab enough to get 4x4s and rollers under cab, reasting on both frames, push onto new frame.

I bolted angles to the seat mounting holes and ran them fwd and found the center to be about 11'' fwd I think, of the back edge of the floorpan and used my engine lift and came in the side. This was with no window glass. Donnie, make sure you bust the cab loose first from the cab mounts/bolts.

I've done Ice's #1 before but I used a loader to lift the cab up no work that way.

Previous owner of my truck just wrapped a small chain through the doorglass area and winched it up. Problems with this method is it crushed the rain gutter, warped the door frames, crushed the tops of the doors and buggered up the cab mounts (which I think were still holding when this was done.)
Alot to be said for weight distribution and a wide area of contact at the lift point.
All above methods however sound fine and should not cause problems.
Make sure the cab is broke loose before lifting! I think Willey used an engine hoist and some brackets to the floor (needs to be steadied when lifting though)

I used two wide tow straps wraped around the outside the cab front to back. one on the driver side and one on the passenger side. Electric winch hooked to a chain that was hooked between two pine trees.

You guys are all way too ingenius. I just found 3 friends with more muscles than brains and we all grabbed a corner....

I with help x3, packed the cab up until we could place two 4x2 RHS channels under cab that were supported either side with the idea of rolling the old chassis
out and rolling the new chassis in! simple. Now the cab still had all glass, doors, steering column and tank, lazy way ?,No dumb way!,the weight of those things alone is enough for 4 people. Well the RHS rolled on its side and scared the crap out of everyone present, once we composed ourselves the next problem showed its self the rear tyres were higher than the bottom of the RHS,not a problem to us just lift one side and pack it up and then the other side easy!!!, the cab slipped 4" sideways ahhh! more comp-osier required, then packed other side up and pushed the cab back to centre, hu! chassis rolled out as easy as you like!.Ever tried to reverse a chassis without a steering wheel that's hard, and it was not a place for ladies that's all I can say!. Anyhow we got it in and down. now the only other thing I can say is DON`T DO IT THAT WAY!!!! please!

I did mine with my stepson and two of his freinds, very easy and very quick and no problem with the cab worping because we had the doors off. I had already made using two saw horses cut down to about 14" tall with castors on them a dolly to set the cab on and was then able to roll it around, in and out of my garage and flip it up on it's back to work the thing top to bottom.

that's why I put it in my Gallery, I knew how to do that and I've see quite a few pics in post that you don't have to use a magnifying glass to look at, I'd like to know how to do that also, you know post something bigger than a postage stamp!

pics in your album are not resized by uploading, whatever size they were to begin with they stay unless you change them.
to get one from the gallery to a post is as easy as turning an ignition key.

open your (or anyone elses) album in a new window.

I removed the doors, seat and fuel tank. I bolted the chains to the lower hinge locations and the rear seat mounts with the bolts. I used my engine lift and found the center of gravity which is actually really close to the dash. I moved the lift point back and let the cab roll forward a bit. I set mine on blocks temporarily.

As for what to do with the cab once it's off, I built a cab dolly out of a few 2x4's. The top pieces fit inside the pockets under the step (you can fit them under the rockers on 65-66 cabs) so floor pans cab be worked on. Or you can make it narower to bolt to the cab mounting pads so rocker or steps can be repaired.

That look great, it sure would make it easier when you come to replace the floor pans for me

just kiddin, I'm going to build a dolly like the one Rosati has. I also like the engine hoist idea because I don't have 6 friends to help lift it off.
