Opinions welcome please - Dana 60 or 9"
Opinions welcome please - Dana 60 or 9"
I'm in the process of building a daily driver out of a 64 short bed that came with a Dana 60, 5 on 5.5. The motor is a 70 Thunderjet 429 with D0VE-C heads and C-6, stock for now. So my question is, is this a good rear end or should I just put the money into a 9" swap? Any info on the Dana would be greatly appreciated, web links, number of splines, full floating or semi, strength under a load, etc. Thanks, Jim

I think a 9" would be the way to go, those danas are heavy. Are you sure its a 60, I thought the 1/2 tons had a 44 if they were equipped with a posi unit. There are plenty of 9" bolt in swaps candidates from pelny of F-100/150's and a million parts for them.

Jim,
that is not a 60 but a 44 rear.
i would swap out for a 9" as parts and different gear sets are more plentiful.
plus the 9" would hold up to the 429 hp and torque much better.

It's definately a 60.
If it's a 60, its worth a lot to the 4x4 crowd in that bolt pattern. The 60 is very stout, but as stated heavy. If I had it, I'd leave it, just because I'd focus on other things more important. The last thing that will die on that truck is a dana 60 rear unless you really over load it.

Is it a limited slip type? And how does it work?

i would like to see a pic of a 1/2 ton 60, i have never seen or heard of that before. not saying you are wrong, but the d 44 rear was used in all f100s that did not have the 9".

Comet wrote:as far as your questions, you will need to post the BOM on the axle. Full float v. semi, you can tell by looking at the hubs.
The ID tag says:
C4TA AK
2671 2 4 64 4.10
On the axle is a 60 and stamped into it are:
4 21 4 A
415 4B1 2671
Thanks, Jim
