camping anyone?

Post by ezernut9mm »

hee, hee. saw this at the swap meet this weekend and thought i'd share.
it is one of 22 made in shawnee ks. a suburb of kansas city back in 68.
suprisingly, it sleeps three, has a stove, sink, fridge, fold down table, and cabinets.

No thanks, I think I will keep my scotty.

I have seen some odd ones but never one that goes in a car. I have seen one that mounts on a station wagon similar to that. If you want something to set a slick off a older canned ham camper or similar one is great.

Hopefully I can explain it so a person can undertand if you have never seen a scotty in person. First off the Scottys were first made in the late 50s by a guy named John Serro. Thats where it gets the 50s look. The wheel well is similar to some of the 50s cars if I remember correctly. The other side looks like this
http://outdoors.webshots.com/photo/2314 ... 8653IFWkFW
The reason its shaped that way on the first picture link I gave is that the floor drops down from about where the green starts at the bottom of the trailer. It has to go forward due to that if I remember correctly.
To look at that scotty to get a better idea check out my album from start to finish. Its at http://outdoors.webshots.com/album/560245562OMCsZD

I think the 60s serro Scottys and the 50s-60s Shastas look the best with a slick. The curves in the campers really goes along with the two. One of the guys who is with the Tin Can tourists had a slick with a canned ham camper he camped with. Both were really nice.

Willy , you did an awsome job on that Scotty . I looked at your pics from start to finish, alot of work! You have a new 1950/60 Scotty .I didnt realize you built it from the frame up. You need some pics hooked up to your slick. Dale

Thanks for the complements. When I get the slick out for the year I plan to take a picture of the slick and the scotty together. If you look through my albums you will see my other camper that gets pulled with my slick. Its a Aristocrat camper. It about twice as big as the scotty but I went with the retro 50s/60s look also. I had to rebuild about half the walls in that one, replace most of the paneling, and all the ceiling. I really like redoing old campers, about 6-9 months for a camper compared to about 4-5 years on my slick. If I can find another camper and be able to fix it up for a profit I think I will do just that. If you want something to set off a slick even a small teardrop will do the job. And when you go to a truck show you don't need a room.

that's cool I didnt realize how extensive the album was. at first I just looked at the first page and thought to myself man what a dump, he's proud of this?

Then I remembered that you did a lot of work on it, and looked closer and found the later pics. wow man. what a revolution. that's cool. SO I gots a ???. so do you have a Scotty Dog, or were you just playing up the namesake with the little wooden scotties? haha either way, it's cool + funny.

Actually the scotty was a brand name of trailers started in the 50s by a man named John Serro. They quit making them when a fire destroyed the factory in the late 90s. Theres a new company that is reproducing them now with the familys ok. YOu can see the history of the camper at http://www.nationalserroscotty.org/reso ... story.html
What got me started in redoing campers was boredom after getting the slick done. We are the primary caregivers of my wifes parents then and didn't get to go on long vacations,4 days or more. So we fell into it, getting away on weekends . I looked on the web for a camper type to buy. I wanted a canned ham type, scotty was my first choice then a shasta for second choice. But I couldn't find one of those and got a 72 Aristocrat which is in the album also. I got it redone and ran across this scotty. I got it for free on the condition I actually redo it and not turn it into a lawnmower trailer. It has taken almost 8 months to rebuild it. I took it to the frame and the only original wood is the tabletop and the overhead bin in the front. I wanted some knobs on the inside that were like a terrier which is the mascot for the camper. I couldn't find any so I made them myself. The scotty dog is to the serro scotty camper like Tony the tiger is to cornflakes. You would be surprised at how many want to buy it. With the high cost of gas and these are towable by almost anything they are getting to be extremely popular. To me the slicks are one of the best looking vehicles to pull a canned ham camper. They have about the same extreme of curves. The 50s Ford trucks and 48-50? Chebby trucks look good with them but those trucks have more curves. They don't go with these campers as well. The dentsides and bumpsides would probably look better with the Aristocrat and other late 60s type of campers. The Scotty Mecca is in PA where the company started. There is even a park made for these campers called Scottyland. I am surprised the PA slick clan doesn't have some of these.
