Brake pedals
I am converting my 66 to a automatic trans and since I have never seen one with a automatic is there a different brake pedal for a automatic, can a 67 to 72 be used and would it be possible to use the pedal from the 77 donor truck too. Jeff
Per Banjopicker who has tried it, the answer is no. 65-66 are set up pretty specific, and using a later, wider, automatic tranny brake pedal won't work.
There were long threads about this (I asked as well) over at the MSN site. Too bad that there is no easy way to get a more modern styled brake for an automatic tranny conversion.
I got a 65 automatic brake pedal assembly off ebay recently, paid more than I should have. I have read as well that it isn't too hard to just use the manual clutch/brake assembly and remove the clutch. Bet that would require at least some metal working or jury rigging, both of which I was not interested in doing.

Just torch off the clutch pedal..??
Could remove the clutch pedal, and install a spacer the same width and diameter as the tube that is on the clutch now. Reinstall the bushings, and good to go.
Fabricating can be fun, just have to look at it in the right light!

Brake pedal for an automatic slick
This is soooo not difficult! Remove the pedal support from your 65. Remove the wider power brake pedal from a 70's F series pickup. Shorten the pivot on the newer pedal arm (hacksaw) and re-instal using the pin and bushings of your choice. The clutch and brake pedal support for 65-66 F series automatic and standard are the same. The later brake pedal arms with the wider pedal are almost a bolt on fit. You just saw off the part of the pivot that you don't need. This also gets you the correct brake pedal ratio for power brakes.
When you have 90% of what you want, think twice about insisting on the other 10%! Thomas Sowell

But in my case, I actually want to keep it manual brakes. I have dual cylinder master and disk brakes and they stop great.
I don't doubt that some mods can be done to make a later wide pedal arm work. I am just too lazy. If I had slightly better tools (mig welder, plasma cutter etc) I might be willing to do more........
