Does Texas allow Y.O.M. (Year of Manufacture) license plates? We have them here in Louisiana. One time fee of $33. Never have to renew. No vehicle inspection required. Pretty good deal. I particularly like not having to have inspections. Not supposed to be used on Daily Drivers and I've heard radical exterior mods can get your plates pulled (but I'm guessing you probably wouldn't be stopped unless you did something else wrong). I have them on my 3 licensed and registered Slicks and have one put aside for my Crew Cab.

Arkansas has a antique tag but like the others it is supposed to be original and only driven as recreation not bearing a certain amount of weight (hauling a ton of topsoil for the garden LOL) with my driving habits and mods I may loose mine scared.gif

How about the inspection requirement in Texas? I thought I understood that if registered as an antique, no inspection required, but could only be driven to the local parade or equivalent. If registered as a classic, inspection required, but restriction on when and where you drive it is lifted.

The frame, body and motor are 25 or more years old, and
it is a collector’s item and will be used solely for exhibition, club activities, parades, and other functions of public interest, and in no case
for regular transportation, and will carry no advertising.

the way i look at texas law is that everywere i go the truck will be on exhibit. now if i can make the officer believe me.

I have 1967 (YOM) Texas Truck Tractor plates on my 67 N 950. I have driven my truck all over the country with them and never had a problem. I have also been in a lot of the truck scales and had no problems. I just have to explain that the truck is an antique and is not a commercial vehicle and that I am headed to a truck show. Last year on my way to Hutchinson Kansas to a truck show I had a toll both operator on the Kansas turnpike walk around to the front of my truck and write my license plate number down. I ask him why that I had never had that done before and he said that the Kansas commerce commision had ask he to do it for all 18 wheelers. When I ask him did he also write the year down he said it is a current plate isn't it? I just said yea and pulled on out.

Got pulled over in my '61 on Monday in Seabrook because the officer said when he ran my plates, it didn't show that I had insurance in the state of Texas system. Showed him the insurance card and he was ok. He also asked about the inspection sticker and I told him it was an antique, so I didn't need one. He let me go, but said I should call insurance to check on it. I did when I got home, and everything is in order. I think he just wanted a closer look at the truck!

You can run YOM plates if you are registered as an antique or classic.

Antique has the driving restrictions and doesn't need inspections.

Classic has no driving restrictions and you have to pass the $15 annual safety inspection.

I don't plan on running YOM plates on the truck but I will have a set on my 58 Plymouth when it is finished. I plan to register it as a classic, just to avoid any possible conflicts over driving restrictions.

I have a copy of the state statute stating that no inspection is required in the glove box of each truck, just in case the patrol persons are not familiar with that specific section of the law (and I wouldn't expect them to be).
