ive heard great things about Subarus.

Toyota may well be blown out of proportion, but they really are good vehicles. Change the oil and dont abuse them and they'll last 300k + with no terrible issues (well, like many of the other jap-mobiles). My Gpa sold an 85 truck several years ago with like 350k miles, rolled it once, and hammered it out (no further body work) and had a patchy white spraycan job, sold it for $2500 or more...

and I have backup saying that Taurai drive terrible! haha

and I dont know who was saying it, but I agree, I think the survivability of the slicks is pretty decent... as long as you got some good 3 point seatbelts, and dont flip it over. I bet the cab wouldnt do too well, but the rear corner pillars may be tougher than I give credit for.

Has anybody ever seen the results of rolling a slick? I wanna know how well they fare when landing on the roof.

Everybody now-a-days insists that you need airbags, collapsable frame, jettisonable engine, all the crap that makes your car disintegrate in a minor bender...

I disagree. If all that destruction was REALLY the way to go, Racecars wouldnt be built the way they are. (IE totally rigid, no planned crush zones, engines are supposed to stay in, and NO Airbags... ) they just have a Roll Cage, good bucket seats and 5 point harnesses. Are the consumer market cars built this way just to compensate for the fact that 99% of people would not wear a 5 point? Probably!

I like my non-collapsible truck. plans to make it even more non-collapsible.

i know soobies are good cars, i had an 05 wrx and that thing flew! they hold resale here pretty good.
i wish i could get her a crown vic. i came across a couple of good deals, but she doesn't want a car that big.
so the short list looks like a late 90's/early 00's taurus, focus, or a camry if i can find one with low miles for a reasonable price.
thanks for all the replies so far guys.

Seconded. I've had a '92 Acura Integra for about 3 years now. It's up to 135,000 miles and routinely gets 31 mpg. No major problems whatsoever and doesn't burn oil. It does have its little idiosyncracies, but overall it's been very reliable.

A low-mile Honda or Acura that's been well cared for is definitely worthy of consideration.

yes its a square box car but cheap and can be fixed at home. even if it puked after 1 year thats only $100 a month cost before fuel and insurance and full coverage is not needed so theres another break.

we rented a PT Cruiser not long ago and that was a pretty good car. Good gas, plenty of size for a kid or two and groceries.
My wife liked it a lot and you can get them off ebay everyday for $5-7,000 Typically a 2001-2004 with 50-90k miles will get you a nice one in that range.

Well, that's one way to get around Craigslist's dinky picture problem.

When I was doing some work for the division office they put me in a older Tarus,a mid 90's I think. It was a plain looking, brown paper bag looking thing. But it had the police package.Damn thing would fly ,had plenty of power, and I actually enjoyed driveing it.Even looked into buying it if and when it went on the state bid sheet. But it was donated to a college or something.
The smallest car I own is a 61 Tbird so if I can stand to drive a Tarus, they cant all be bad.

it's looking like a focus is going to be the one. i dunno, but ultimatly, she will be the one driving it so the final say so is going to be up to her. i found an 05 with 42k for 9,900 asking. i'm going to look at it tomorrow and see what is what.
