Air bags

Post by Fanatic »

I've been thinkin' (yes my head hurts)
What would be wrong with removing all of the leaves on the front of my Uni except the main leaf and using a Shockwave type air bag? The springs would keep the axle located and I'd have infinite ride height adjustment.

Other than the fact that the steering wheel would be in different positions depending on height----what else am I missing?

Wouldn't be much different than a 1/2 leaf air ride big truck I wouldn't think. I don't think it will affect your steering centering tha much.

I am thinking of doing something similar to my F350. It rides like a hay wagon right now. I was thinking of taking some springs out until the ride gets better, then when I need the weight carrying capacity I could just put more air in the bags.

Air Bags

I would be very interested to know how this works out. I am at a place right now on a build where I am considering switching to an IFS, but still curious about this. Keep us posted on this thread won't you. TR

I would give some serious thought to the effect there would be as to axle "wrap" during braking especially during extreme braking. Seems to me that the axle "wrap" could cause some severe unwanted steering of the front wheels while the steering wheel is kept in one position. A single leaf would not hold the proper angle of the axle very well during braking unless a torque rod of some sort was incorporated into the design. Just something for consideration.

somewhere in this post i think twistedfreak has a front setup that uses tubing to locate the axle.

you can do air on a straight axle but you have to use air ride shock waves and they are a little pricey but it can be done with no axle wrapping at all its no different than a shock in the front it just goes up and down at your will.
