I am really hoping that becomes true... lol or at least cart them all back from SS IV...

Anthony I am going with (at least my current thinking) the Ford "Sonic Blue" and the ford "ultra white" two tone paint job. I am going to paint up my lasercut slick with these 2 colors to see what happens and what it looks like. I just have to make it down to the paint shop to get the small sample of paint.

Thanks all for the comments one day I will get to drive it.. Still looking for a motor for it (351FI with OD tranny). Just need a free weekend to hit the bone yards or get lucky and find one runing. :D

you need to find a wrecked gen 1 lightning. the 351w's in those were rated 240/340. and they had the a4od trans. i didn't even start to mod mine until 100k. lol. put a chip, long tubes, and full exhaust on it then and it ran like a beast. with the 4:10's it really left quick, but lacked some after 70mph or so. needed more hp. but, 340 is a lot of tq and with the low gears it would get up and go.
the od trans let it run about 2250 at 70mph and averaged about 17 on the hiway. the truck weighed about 4200lbs.

I would love to find one of those Gen1 trucks do you know where one is that semi close to Texas? If I found one and the motor/tranny wasn't extermly expensive, I would grab fast very fast, very very fast...

Chris, if you are really interested in a Gen I Lightning setup in it you could search the web for a salvage/rebuilder - there are plenty of places who sell rebuilders that have inventory online.

Flame suit, zip.

I wouldn't waste time on a gen 1 lightning engine, one could do much better with a carbed 351 or 302 roller (5.0). I might go with a 5.3 4l60e in my 250 crew. It's hard to beat 315 HP and 22MPG out of a pushrod V8 that is easy to make run stand alone. 5.3/4l60e combos go for 1500 here.

You better get that flame suit on! What's your problem with a Gen 1 Lightning engine? GT40 heads, 94-95's have a roller cam, decent power and MPG. Only problem is availability and price, I am building my own "Lightning" engine using a roller cam 351W out of a 95 van, GT40P heads off of a 2000 Explorer and a Edelbrock Performer intake. Have $300 in engine so far after some parts searching and wheeling and dealing.

So instead of using a Gen 1 lightning engine you're building an engine, just like I said would be better. The lightning engine is nothing special 240 hp and 340 ft·lbf with a crappy engine management system that's tied to arguably the worst trans that ford ever built. If you find one, it will come with a unjustified, inflated price tag. Just like you're doing, a person could build a better engine that is more powerful without the crappy electronics and the ability to run an AOD, c4 or c6. As far as a lightning getting good mileage...that's the first I'd heard that one. I've worked on and driven Lightnings, they are good trucks, but I wouldn't re power anything with Gen 1 drive train. A Gen II on the other hand 01-04 had 380/450 and a blower, I could see getting one of those. I wouldn't though. I don't really like the mod engines too much, they just don't make the power they should will overhead cams. They don't get the mileage they should either. To top it off they are a pain to work on. The 5.3 has 320 hp and 340 ft·lbf, more than the lightning engine. It's also much more efficient and easier to work on.

All that said, I would bet that a slick with a 5.0 from an explorer with 4100 and some headers would smoke a gen I lightning.....

Update on Progress:

I have found a good 5.8L eninge out of a EX50/FX50 (the yard said F150 but it had the van Motor mounts and dipstick tube). The motor has 81K on it and plugs were in great shape. I turned it over and it had really good compression. I am going to check out the botton end and replace gaskets while I am into it (little sepage going on :D ). I think I will also spring for new oil pump couldn't hurt and it is an easy task while it out.

I am still waiting on a transmission from the same place they had a little mix up and delivered a C6 but they were suppose to deliver the OD tranny early this week.

I mounted the motor to the frame this weekend and it fit just perfectly on the 352 engine perches using the same holes the 352 did. I mesured and it looks like it is the perfect spot. I did change out the motor mounts for the truck ones ($21.00 a side) as they worked with the old perches. If I was to use the van mounts it would require me to fab a bracket. I like easy..

Front View of Engine: (yes miss alt and bracket but there looking for one)

Other things I did this weekend (that I don't have pictures of yet):

Started working on the rear frame rails, It looks like at one time someone bent the bumper and it pealed some of the frame down. I am in the progress of cuting out bad and replacing it. Good thing is I have thick enough metal I can turn my welder up to about 4 (out of 6). I don't often get to weld the thick stuff so much nicer than the thin stuff.

I also filled a couple of holes in the dash and sprayed more sealer on it. I used a little body filler to smooth things over and was able to spray real primer. My goal is to spray color and clear on dash before Nov 21 weekend. :D

Nice job so far Chris, looks like the motor I put in Jinx. Can't tell you how high my motor is sitting above the frame, but when I put the cover over the throttle body, it rubs on the hood of my truck. It might be worth while looking for the 5.0 intake off a Mustang, LDT or Grand Marquis as they sit lower, and come off the side.

Crewcab

Looking good Chris, is that a roller cam engine?
What's the transmission, AOD or AODE or E4OD?
Why not run the later 302/351M engine mount frame stands? They will drop the engine 1" and have the correct driveline angle. Could prevent trans to cab interference too.
I think the 302 alternator bracket is the same as the 351W, the bracket I believe only bolts to the head, doesn't bolt to the block or water pump.
If you can't find any of that stuff local I can always find it here and bring it to Smithville.

I am hoping they bring me the E40d tranny, that's what I asked for so we will see. I am losing faith in that bone yard right now but I will give them the chance to redeme them self.

On the mounts I did not know the newer ones would drop the engine 1". I think I will switch to those mounts as I think hood clearance could be fun. I can't make it to the bone yard before the 21st so if you could grab those stands that would be great. I will pick them up in smithville from you, I might even ask you about that tranny (from the email) but I want to see what this place brings me first. Just PM me how much the stands would be and I will have the funds with me @ smithville.

I know I can find the alt bracket, I know where serveral of them are right now and that is low on my prority list right now.

Dean - I also have thought about the hood clearance but I have a mustang/Tbird intake and upper sitting in the background just in case. I won't know that answer until after cab is back on the frame and the hood is on the truck. Hopefully with the newer stand like Bluebolt said I won't run into that problem. :D

i am not 100% on this but if you run the E4od you will need the computer that is also set up to run the 351 right?

There's serveral ways you can control the E40d. You can also have seperate controls for tranny and eninge.

1. buy the external computer controls $500
2. use factory computer that orginaly controlled the tranny and chip it.
3. Grab a 7.2Liter disel computer that really only controlded the tranny (90-93 ish)

I think I will be going with option number two but use a 95/96 computer that had mass air flow instead of bank fired plus the tranny controls. Wire harnness will be the main fun part and If I want to chip I still can tweecer or Quarterhorse will be the two I choose from. I like playing with my seeting when I want to :D

You also need the computer controls to run AODE, and that other one I can never remeber.. 4xxrxx..
