I wouldn't waste time on a gen 1 lightning engine, one could do much better with a carbed 351 or 302 roller (5.0). I might go with a 5.3 4l60e in my 250 crew. It's hard to beat 315 HP and 22MPG out of a pushrod V8 that is easy to make run stand alone. 5.3/4l60e combos go for 1500 here.

You better get that flame suit on! What's your problem with a Gen 1 Lightning engine? GT40 heads, 94-95's have a roller cam, decent power and MPG. Only problem is availability and price, I am building my own "Lightning" engine using a roller cam 351W out of a 95 van, GT40P heads off of a 2000 Explorer and a Edelbrock Performer intake. Have $300 in engine so far after some parts searching and wheeling and dealing.

So instead of using a Gen 1 lightning engine you're building an engine, just like I said would be better. The lightning engine is nothing special 240 hp and 340 ft·lbf with a crappy engine management system that's tied to arguably the worst trans that ford ever built. If you find one, it will come with a unjustified, inflated price tag. Just like you're doing, a person could build a better engine that is more powerful without the crappy electronics and the ability to run an AOD, c4 or c6. As far as a lightning getting good mileage...that's the first I'd heard that one. I've worked on and driven Lightnings, they are good trucks, but I wouldn't re power anything with Gen 1 drive train. A Gen II on the other hand 01-04 had 380/450 and a blower, I could see getting one of those. I wouldn't though. I don't really like the mod engines too much, they just don't make the power they should will overhead cams. They don't get the mileage they should either. To top it off they are a pain to work on. The 5.3 has 320 hp and 340 ft·lbf, more than the lightning engine. It's also much more efficient and easier to work on.

All that said, I would bet that a slick with a 5.0 from an explorer with 4100 and some headers would smoke a gen I lightning.....

I dont kno which year 5.3 your looking at but the 99 first gen had 265hp 02 had 285hp my 02 z71 had the super chip and headers and dynoed 300hp at the rear wheels. and i wouldnt piss on the 4l60. if your going to run a chevy combo in the ford anyway put a turbo 350 or 400 behind the 5.3 advanced adapters make the adapter we do it every day in the crawlers we build they are a much better combo

Chris, I got some measurements of the 5.8 in Jinx yesterday, 24" above the frame is the maximium height you can have. And my hinges are slightly sloppy which means you may not be able to go that high.

I think I will be going with option number two but use a 95/96 computer that had mass air flow instead of bank fired plus the tranny controls. Wire harnness will be the main fun part and If I want to chip I still can tweecer or Quarterhorse will be the two I choose from. I like playing with my seeting when I want to

Hi Chris,
I, too am doing a late 5.8 and an E4OD with a factory harness on my 66 F100. I have two wrecking-yard engines, one from a 95 Bronco with a EEC-IV SD system and the other from a 97 F250 with EEC-V, SFI and MAF. Interesting thread, I will be watching your progress. I need to go through one of the shortblocks, as they both failed miserably when I did a cylinder leakdown on them, and I will be installing some old J302 aluminum heads I just got back from the machine shop. 351 Windsors make great power with good heads and exhausts, and they are tough engines that are easy to modify.

Fortunately the E4OD was a recent Ford reman, and the fluid looks great. I am looking for a decent shifter that will work with the cable setup. A column shift would be ideal, but I can deal with a floor shifter.

Good luck with your project.! I will post info on mine soon, too.

fire truck - Thanks for the offer, I might PM you when I get to that point, there are a lot of the C4C at my yards also. So many things to do not enough time.

Dean - Thanks for those measurements that is helpful. Brain Taylor was out at my place yesterday and we did some measuring on his also and came up with the same results. I found a couple of trucks with the 72-79 style mounts I just have to go back and get them out. I need to bring a buddy to help as it makes the process a lot easier. I like how the other perches set the engine about 1 - 2 inches above the cross memeber.

Thunderboy - sounds like your on the same track as me as far as engine and tranny. I will keep this updated as much as possible and will get out to see your progress. Also you might check this out if you planning on "chipping" your computer... I think I will be going with this option as well. http://www.moates.net/product_info.php?cPath=73_63&products_id=199

ezernut9mm - I actually sparyed some color last night, I didn't have the gun set correctly so I have just a few runs  . Oh well that is why they invented sandpaper (At least that my story).. :) I was mostly a color test to see if this blue and white works. I'm thinking the blue is to dark for me but I will wait a week or so and see what I think. Of course this pic is the one from my Phone but I will get the better ones posted hopefully this week sometime.

I will have my LaserCut crew at smithville for all to see. It's not perfect but it is painted with above colors... :D :D

If you look at it long enough you will like it.

When I was ordering my new dump truck I was set on going with the same light blue that I had on the old one. Till I took a new dark blue one home for the weekend. Like the dark blue enough to change the order.

Blue and white

Post by Truckrat »

Chris, I am betting that color is a lot lighter in the sunlight compared to what it appears like in the shade of the shop. I saw that place you shot just for fun a while back and it looked lighter. Unless you tricked me and bought some darker stuff, it ought to really pop in the sun. TR

Yea that spot I had painted early on was a lot lighter and a totaly different blue. I have since found that paint again and I did a test last night on the lasercut crew and it is night/day different.

I hope to get some sanding then repaint tonight on the dash. I will get a new pic up before the weekend Hopefully. I want to at least have that picture for smithville along with the lasercut....

Sorry to those who like this dark blue but it is not for me. Even in the sunlight it didn't lighten up it actually almost looks purple in direct sunlight.. Good thing I only bought a Pint of this color I guess I could use it else where you never know when you need paint....

Oh and yes this is that old test patch you were thinking about TR...

It has been a while since I updated my progress. I have done more work on the crew and not on the computer. Got 212 or less days now. So a short update for now.

The last few weekends I have been preping the frame for powder coating. Trying to make sure all is ready.

This was the first weekend of blasting. A very good friend Brian T came out and lended a hand. He just loved sifting the play sand (used that in addtion to. Not worth all that sifting lol)

He did have some help :D (Left - Alxe, Middle - Mattie, Right - Brian)

Even with the slicker on I still got dirty really dirty. Stayed dry except for my shoes.
Image

The finished product after this weekend blasting fun. I didn't have help this weekend sure wish I did but with Brian not having finger prints I guess he was out doing something

The radius Arms got blasted

Brian welding on the tranny mount to make it look good. This was a while ago but still a great help.

So to sum it all up the I dropped the frame off at powder coaters today. I will pick it up on Thursday afternoon. It should be done quicker than that but they weren't for sure so I said wait till thursday afternoon. I can't wait and will update after I have it back.

Oh and I have more pictures up for engine/frame -> http://www.purpleflyingmonkey.com/CrewCab/frame-engine/index.html

:) Looking good Chris, don't be in too much of a hurry to put the cab back on, get all the lines and rear wiring done first, it`s easier to bend over the frame than to crawl under it!!! :(
