Are all 9" rears virtually the same?

The place to talk Slicks. All we ask is that discussion has something to do with slicks...

Are all 9" rears virtually the same?

Post by northbayclay »

Can I feel fairly confident swapping the pumpkins in my trucks? They are a '64 F100 and a '65 F100...both stock Ford 9".

I've heard talk of rear axles with different numbers of splines, but I imagine that has to do with 4X4's or heavier trucks.

Thanks for any help

The rears should be the same. Both should have 28 spline carriers. Ford went to 31 splines in trucks about 1973. Should be a simple swap.
Be sure the input yoke is the same. They are interchangable if you have to swap them. Becomes a pain to do as the yoke nut is torqued to 170 ft/lbs. If you remove the yoke, you should install a new "crush sleeve".
If you drove a Ford, you wouldn't need a good wrench!

Just a short note that on 70-72 F-100 Ford Trucks did carry a 31 spline axle also so be on a watch on that too so 73 was not the first years of the 31 spline axles

Check the spline count for sure. I had a '70 F-100 with 31 spines.
