lowering the brake pedal

Post by shaun_p_62234 »

does anybody know how to lower the brake pedal on a manual brake 64 cause i hate having to pull my leg up to my chin to get to the brake pedal. i guess that i could go to power brakes but i like the manual brakes. maybe i should pay like 3 grand for some baer brakes and a new master cylinder or uhh not. have fun with this one

Sounds like you have a dual master cyl on it. if so you might need to shorten the plunger rod. The truck i have had this problem and I ended up haveing to cut out 1 inch of the rod and weld it. some people thread them and use a allthread nut so they can fine tune the petal height.

there is already fine tuning for the rod, it is the eccentric bolt that holds it on to the pedal.
the dual mc rod does need shortening by approx. 1" to be used on the 61-64 pedal.

Thats what i like about this site theres always something to learn. Glad to learn about them useing a eccentric bolt mine had one that was centered it fit correctly so i never gave any thought.

Does anyone know how much adjustment this gives the petal. The reason I ask is I need to get my petal lower. Its set to match the clutch petal but after couple of test drives I can tell my wore out knee is going to need the petal an inch or so lower.

Great post... my 66 has dual MC (manual of course) and the brake pedal is probably 2 inches too high and like you said, my knee's KILL me after only a short ride having to bring it way up and sometimes hitting the steering column, etc.
So your saying to thread the rod and putting a nut on it or is this some kit you buy?

no, you take the rod off, cut 1" off the m.c. end and put it back together.
the bolt has an eccentric in it, you just need to fine tune it when you put it back on so the pedal is where its supposed to be and you have a small amount of freeplay before it starts pushing on the mc piston.when you are turning the head of that bolt, you find the right spot, hold it then tighten the nut up without turning the bolt.

The most important thing is make sure the master cylinder will bottom out before the pedal hits the floor. You want full piston travel in the MC, just in case.
