Towing? / Mirrors?

Post by frank66 »

I will be using my truck to tow my race car. I don't have a trailer yet, but I will be getting an open deck car trailer. The side mirrors on my truck just plain suck. the fold down at speeds over 50 or if you slam the door too hard or going down a bumpy road. i think they will work for the open trailer but even with them properly adjusted i could not see around my dad's enclosed trailer. (picture of slick in action in gallery) I will be towing this trailer occasionally so I need new mirrors.

what large mirrors will look good on a slick? I am not a big fan of the west coast style.

Since you won't be needing the big mirrors often, maybe you could use THESE temporary mount mirrors. I've also seen some temporary ones for door mount.
Then just un-strap them when you're done. :)

I don't think the west coast mirrors are the best looking but I do believe they are the best mirror as for as rear vision. You can get the swing away mirrors at parts houses. I liked this type as they came from the factory on my early 80s truck. They are well braced and have the option to swing down flat when needed. I believe they were about 5" X 8" heads. Not very expensive either. Might be able to find a set in the salvage yard. Good luck.

I have a set of stainless west coast mirrors I would sell. I also have the 67 style western junior mirrors which can be used on our trucks. Both sets are for sale.

Thanks for the replies

SlickFan, i was considering those temporary mirrors, but i couldn't figure out if they would mount correctly. i always thought they were for "newer" cars that have "flat" hoods. you know, hoods that don't curve over the sides like ours do.

jakdad, i agree that the west coast mirrors are the best to look behind you, but i just don't like to look at them.

64 f100. do you have pics or prices? i can't spend too much because i still have to buy a trailer and finish my racecar. where are you located? send me a private message or an e-mail

has anyone ever modified the nice chrome round mirrors? can you replace the middle piece with a longer one?

Frank,
that is why i like the adjustable pole mirrors, they fit in the same hole as the round chrome ones.i think you could modify one to work ok, as long as you dont use the plastic piece into the door that some of the chrome mirrors use.that will likely break if too much weight is added.there is a steel piece for those that is stronger.

ICEMAN, i'm not sure what you mean by "pole" mirrors. if you are able to find a picture or a link, that would be really helpfull.

are you talking about these?

Real nice, if it only had a more aggressive tire.

Back on track if you could find those mirrors I think they look a lot better than any of the other aftermarket stuff.

FRank, i used to keep better eye out for those but lately i have not been looking.i usually search thru the 61-66 trucks stuff rather than mirrors in general.
they seem to sell whenever they are on e-bay,and usually are new in the box.
