Rusty 63 F100 + 04 CV PI

Post by Rusty 63 »

I need to find & upload some more pics for a full history, but here's a link to my photobucket album as it stands:

http://s817.photobucket.com/albums/zz99 ... %20Pickup/

Image

My dad bought this truck back in '89 while I was away at school. We used it in our landscaping business & my brother drove it a lot, too. The background we got from the PO is that it was originally a military vehicle (where we're from in NJ wasn't far from Fort Dix - and I've found some olive drab showing through in places) and it looks to have been a straight 6 / 3 on the tree combo. When we got it it'd been swapped to the 302/c4 combo in the ad. Funny thing is that the clutch pedal is still there, but the column/box has been swapped out for an auto unit, then later (I guess) the column shifter disconnected and a cheapo shifter was put on the floor. It loved to jump into/out of gear which made the truck fun to drive, especially with the bump-steer of the straight axle & Mickey Thompsons!

Eventually, we did some body work, painted it blue over the former red repaint, and swapped out the mud tires for some radials (blackwalls out) that handles a lot better. Then we drove it for years. This pic is before the tire swap - the guy in the white T-shirt, Derek, gave me the tires that are still on it today!

Image

I think it got "parked" 5 years later, and has pretty much been sitting ever since. Of course it came with us when the family moved to FL, and since the building business is slow now (that's my day job www.SchaeferHomesLLC.com) I'm enjoying some hobby time & getting dirty, reliving the fun wrench-turning years of my youth.

I started in the rear - because it was the cheaper end & also, in my mind, a safer place to learn to weld! I got a set of drop mono leafs & went to town. Pulled the bed, puled the rear, swapped the springs & reinstalled for a test fit. Yup - I needed c-notches so pulled it apart, became one with the wire wheeler, cleaned it all, boxed the frame, cut & welded in the notches & bump stops, then prepped it for POR15 & chassis black. Threw it all together, then spun her around to get to work on the nose.

Then while looking for parts & pieces last year, absolutely convinced I was going with a fatman m2 front end, I came across this site (& the other - fte) and have literally stumbled into a treasure trove of info! I've learned so much & thank you all!

I know you won't all agree with me or the choices I'm making, but here it goes. After much reading & research, I've decided to go with a Crown Vic swap. I got my donor last night. 2004 CV Police Interceptor. Rear ended pretty hard, but it starts & drives fine. I plan to harvest the front suspension, rear end (I know it's too wide but since I've got a rusty flare side, I figure I can easily widen it!), radiator, most of the AC, engine, trans, driveshaft, ecu/harness, booster & master cylinder, and hopefully even the anti-lock brakes. I hope to part out the carcass - front clip, doors, possibly the interior - to help offset my expenses & then scrap the hulk at the end.

If you're curious, the 41 Studebaker Commander is Pop's - he was out of town so I took delivery of it here for him... the day before my CV got dropped off. Needless to say, my wife, and deed-restricted-community neighbors are loving me right now!

Now I've got to come up with a plan of attack to disassemble the parts car & get rid of the carcass in roughly 30 days... Wish me luck!

Going to be a cool build.
There are 3" wider than stock fiberglass rear fenders out there, several places sell them.

Peeled the hood & fenders off today... took a LOT longer than I'd anticipated. A whole lot more bolts than I expected. When's that darned CD manual going to get here? LOL

Image

Oh - and thanks for the fiberglass fender suggestion - I'd given that some thought, but I always kinda thought the bed looked a little narrow anyway.. Saw a story on Dan Carpenter's trucks in CT magazine last year where he set them up with wider boxes and have been hard pressed to get the idea out of my head... When I read Randy's post (Carcrafter22 & his 67 CV swap project) and how he said the rear in these cv's is too wide for our trucks, the two ideas clicked in my mind & I think it's the way I want to go.

The snake is longer! Figured out the antilock unit's clip. Surprisingly simple when you figure out you're looking at the wrong end!

Image

So dad & I spent the afternoon chasing more wires, trying to tear the dash apart, and draining the coolant/ pulling coolant hoses (you actually have to remove the heater core lines in order to remove a clip on the heating/cooling system - fun!).

My brother in law works at Ford (great to have inside info when it comes to questions) and he's going to take the old 289/c4 off my hands for a spare driveline for my sister's 65 mustang... it has a 3 spd stick, but it's geared too high & likes to eat clutch disks. Between that and a bad ankle, the auto will be a welcome change of pace. Anyway, once that space is free, and I figure out how, we'll pull the 4.6 & trans & get ready to move the suspension over.

Wish us luck!

No doubt! A bigger space would be nice, but... so the last two days have been fairly productive... got the whole harness off the front end, drained the fluids (why don't tranny pans have %$#&* drain plugs??? LOL), got the dash out (what a beech!), pulled the steering column, ecu, dash harness (why is it integral with the harness that runs down the door sill on both sides??), the ebrake setup (think that's getting transplanted too), and also unbolted the brake pedal/booster/mc & gas pedal. Whew.

Image

Hey does anyone know anything about ABS? I'm wondering if I should bleed the system dry before I start braking fittings loose, or if the ABS brain/pump needs to keep fluid in it. I can just see me bleeding it dry & then finding they're near impossible to bleed the air out of. LOL

Find myself staring at parts of the cowl & thinking I can cut patches for the 63 that'll be close enough to save me some time trying to bend metal myself. I know this isn't a perfect comparison, but I'm thinking about the compound curve area low on the cowl of the cv (passenger side shown) and the similarly curvy area mid-cowl on the '63 (drivers side shown). Figure any patch metal I cut out of the car is at "scrap value" versus going & buying it new, so I might as well swiss cheese this puppy for all she's worth.

Image

Image

Speaking of scrap value -is there any value in the straight i-beam axel I'm replacing from the '63 other than scrap? I'm planning to fill the carcass of the CV with all the un-needed metal in the garage & sell it for scrap all at once.... (hopefully I won't find out I needed something after that!).

Good news is that I've gotten some replies to my CL ad for parts - figure anything I sell makes the donor less expensive (& therefor my wife happier!)

I see you like a wiring harness as much as I do when you are totally striping a car. I did a 88 Tbird.

Yeah, loving the wires!

Nothing exciting for pictures, but got the brakes bled out, pulled the pedal/booster/master cylinder & broke the lines loose to get off the antilock setup, the gas pedal & cable, steering column, radiator, ps/trans cooler, and driveshaft... waiting on my buddy Chris (he's an AC guy) to come & evacuate the refrigerant from the AC system so we can get that out too. (My inner tree-hugger won't let me crack the fittings & let that stuff fly).

Need to get another 15mm deep socket to get off the exhaust (don't you hate it when sockets go missing?!?)...

Ok, so we got the AC taken care of, and got the condenser out of the way, also got the exhaust off, anti-lock controller thing, rubber floor mat, a/c box on the firewall, disconnected all the brake lines and antilock sensors, and pulled the rest of the harness out. The darned harness fills two boxes and has to weigh over 25 lbs! Yeah - it'll be fun putting that on a diet! Since the tail of the car was so crushed, I couldn't get to the evap can (??? I'm guessing here) and wire harness plug (assuming for the fuel pump) from underneath the car (the hitch was bent up & under the cover plate). So I emptied the truck & used an air saw to ginsu the trunk floor & pried it back like opening a can of sardines. Got the plug undone & pried & tweaked to get the can & pan dropped, then hammered the trunk flaps back down so all the scrap steel won't fall out when we fill it back up! I think even more fun that that was unplugging the fuel gauge sender - the wire drops under the package tray & onto a crossmember over the gas tank. So you have to reach your finger thru a little cutout in the crossmember & release the connector with crap falling in your face. Fun! But it's done & that's the key.

My brother-in-law (Galloway Ford Parts Department Director) ordered me up a set of tools to undo the fuel & ac lines, and is trying to find the lift brackets for the engine so we can get it out. Unless anyone else has an idea where it's safe to lift this thing w/o breaking the heads, valve covers, sensors, engine wire harness, etc.... LOL

Image

Yeah, I think we just need to disconnect the power steering lines from the pump to the rack, get the engine out, then the front suspension, then the rear end, fuel & brake lines (I hope to re-bend & re-use as much as possible - waste not want not!) & then cut out whatever patch metal we can and we can get rid of the carcass.

Engine's out!

Post by Rusty 63 »

Ok, so what have I accomplished in 2 weeks? Looking at the pics, I know we got the fuel lines & ac lines all apart, pulled the tank (what a bear that was), and finally got the engine/transmission out.

Image

Next step is going to be to put it back down on the tires, roll the car forward til the firewall is just inside the garage door, jack it back up, pull the front end (roll it out on the tires) then cut off the frame rails just behind the trans x-member mount. I figure this way I can save the entire trans x-member so I can try to use it in the truck (my existing trans member is a c-channel, open end facing down bolted to the bottom lip of the frame rail's c-section, and it's all pretty tweaked out. This car's got a pretty stout one, so rather than fab from scratch, I figure I might as well try to retrofit some more modern Ford Chassis parts!

Image

After the frame rails are cut off, we can jack up the back, pull the rear axle.... and so on, & try to get this thing out of here next week. Wish us luck!

Ok, so we started today by pulling the body mount bolts & putting the tires back on. Rolled it outside to clean out the garage a bit, then rolled it back in & got the fuel lines & brake lines out of the way by jacking the body off the frame & sliding them sideways.

Image

Then we dropped the front suspension and rolled it out, & then cut off the frame rails just behind the trans crossmember mounts - the rails are roughly the size of 2x4's here and it made for a nice & simple place to cut.

Image

Image

Got loads of room to work around the rear end now...

Next step will be pulling the rear & the rest of the exhaust....
