I've been looking around for a 65-66 an came across this today. Did early 65's have the '64 grille? Anybody nearby that could check it out?

Gregg's correct. That's a 63 grill. Unique to that year.

You need only replace the upper valance with one from a '65 or '66. Easy to do.
Once you remove the grill, 3 bolts on each side to the fender, 2 down to the supports in the center on the core support, and 3 across the top.
It looks like possibly it has a '65 valance, but there is something in the holes where the turn signals would be?
The seller or previous owner may have changed out the grill, and used the '63 turn signals.

The grill and front valance (piece above the grill) would have needed to be changed. Probably not to difficult to put the 65 grill back if the 63 grill was recently installed. (Rusted bolts in the valance, grill and fenders are notorious PITA's). You could always pick up a 65 grill and install it and use the Tri-bar headlights with the turn signal lights in the bottom for a clean (no turn signal in the grill) look.

Yeah,but.
i enlarged the picture but i can't tell if the roof has the 'indent' from '64 & up.
Looking at the interior shot the bottom of the dash at the steering column is straight [flat], weren't they arched up on the '64+ 2 wd?
IMHO: I think it is really a '63.

I just gave him a call. The hood, upper valance and grille are all from a '63 donor truck. The cabs an bed are original. He replaced the original filler neck hole with metal and used the 79's gas tank, so the gas door is now on the side of the bed. Sounds like he did it up right. He's gonna send some more pics when he's got time.
