Someone besides FoMoCo put it in your '59....
My information tells me that the 262" inline 6-cylinder engine was only produced from 1961-1964. It was a truck use-only motor, where most were used in the bigger 1961-64 C550/C600 tilt cab trucks, F500/600 trucks and B600 busses. The only year is was used in an F100/250(4x2, 4x4), F350 trucks was 1964. Many engine parts interchange with the 223 with minimal to no modifications necessary. Also realize that there were two types of 262s...a 262-Light Duty (mainly used in the smaller trucks) and a 262 Heavy Duty (used in the larger trucks).
An easy & foolproof way to determine if you've got a 223 or a 262 is to pull a sparkplug and poke a 10" piece of stiff copper wire down the cylinder bore. With the piston at the bottom of its stroke, mark the copper wire at the sparkplug hole. Turn the engine over (by hand) to bring the piston up to the top and mark the wire again. The stroke of a 262 is 4.03"; whereas, the stroke of a 223 is only 3.60".

im pretty sure thats a 223
oil fill should be in the middle of valve cover, not the front
... i guess it could have a 223 head on it though
well heck... now im just spinning circles

Don,
I'm pretty certain there are differences between early and late 223 distributors due to a difference in their oil pump drive attachment.
I also think there are more than one type of 262 distributor, possibly due to the differences in application of the Light Duty 262 and the Heavy Duty 262 (used in the 500/550/600 bigger trucks).
I don't believe any of the 223 distributors will interchange with any of the 262 distributors.
Just my

At that angle, it looks more like a '58 grille to me...... ??mikewirth wrote:Is that the original grille? I had a 1959 and it was not cubed pattern for lack of better terms, it had 5 or so horizontal bars running across and if I remember right the 1960 had 1 big bar between the lights
Here is a pretty good Ford grille chart from jakdad: http://www.1966ford.com/images/BIG48-72.JPG
