My build

I'm starting this thread to keep myself motivated and to hopefully encourage others that they can do it. Feel free to ask any questions along the way. I'm starting with a 2 wheel drive 1966 F-250 with a 300ci 6 cylinder and 4 speed tranny. This used to be my daily driver, but has been sitting in my backyard for over 3 years. I'm hoping to end up with something that looks like nascar had a truck series in the 60's. I also want it to sit on air bags and be able to tow an 1100 pound car on an open trailer.

Tear down.

Yes. That was my first time using a bead roller and I'm pretty happy with how it came out. I practiced on a piece of scrap first and just did what I see the guys on tv do. I bought those little clamps from harbor freight and they actually worked very well holding the piece in place to weld.

Build it like nascar had a trucks series in the 60s that was the same kind of idea I had idea I had in mind for my 64 short box. Not something you would see everyday. My thoughts were white grey and black for colors. Lower it a couple inches and some black wheels

I had no idea the rust was this bad. I just kept cutting out more and more!

Basically the whole lower corner of the cab had to be cut out.

The inside is almost back together.

Been trying to get a little bit done everyday. Hoping to have both sides of the cab done before the new year. I've also ordered new cab mounts to weld in.

Progress is slow, but steady. I took the cab off the frame with a fixture I made for my engine hoist. It worked pretty well, I can take more pictures of it if anyone is interested. After the cab was off, I turned it on it's back and started cleaning off the grease and oil that had built up over the years. Today I started drilling out the spot welds on the rotted cab mounts.

I have been thinking about using this front clip from Johnson Chassis Inc. It is designed as a replacement front end for GM 'metric' race cars. (1980's Monte Carlos) I already have most of the steering components and upper control arms I could use that were my spares for my old race car. I would build the rest of the frame out of box tubing. I seem to change my mind everyday about what direction to go with the truck. I'm going to get the cab mounts and supports done while I think this over. They're calling for snow this weekend, so hopefully I can make some $ with my plow.

Lookin good! What motor are you thinking about swapping in?

Also-have you thought about doing a 03+ Crown Vic IFS swap up front? Seems to be the most cost effective way to IFS, and it'll be conducive to going bagged

Good news! Made a lot of money plowing. Was out for 30 hours straight.

It is listed for $695 on their website. My local speedshop is a dealer for this company, I'm not sure what he gets for them but I'm sure it's a little more for shipping and profit.

For now I'm leaving the 300-6. Don't have the money for a new V8 right now. It does have some work done to it though, clifford intake, holley 4412 two barrel carb, efi exhaust manifolds, electronic ignition, head work. I think I have a set of 1:7 rockers somewhere on a shelf for it too.

I have thought about the Crown Vic, but any that are for sale around here where abused their whole life. NYC PD and Taxi's. I would have to replace every bolt on anyway. Junk yards here want rediculous prices for stuff too. I already have a lot of the parts I would need for the Johnson clip from my old race car.

After gathering parts all summer, I'm starting to work on the truck again. I bought an extreme drop member from Porterbuilt Fabrication. It's built for the Chevy trucks, but that doesn't really matter because I'll be building the rest of my frame with box tubing. This cross member came with tubular control arms, air bags, shocks, a power steering rack, and a sway bar. I also got drop spindles and disc brakes from McGaughys. I found a 9" rear from a '79 bronco on craigslist, and a ZF S-42 five speed transmission on ebay. My next big purchase will be wheels and tires so I can start figuring out the ride height of the frame.

Here is the Porterbuilt front end just sitting in place.

Here is the 5 speed bolted to my 300. Has anyone used this transmission?

I am trying to give away some stuff. See my post in the For Sale section. Good complete 3/4 ton frame and suspension, steering box, T-18 transmission. I need the space in my shop and would hate to scrap this stuff. Delivery available if you pay for gas and tolls. viewtopic.php?f=6&t=31221
