I run Shell Rotella in my jeep with a 4.0L fuel injected straight six , old motors with flat tappet cams like it because it still has some zinc in it , you should be fine, diesel oil's have more detergents in them and it will break down sludge if any is built up :2cents:

TRJS,
I don't know where you located on the globe, but if you're going to use 30W motor oil in your Slick and you live in an area where it gets below 20*F, remember to allow the engine to idle (~1000rpms) and warm up some (a couple of minutes) before putting the spurs to it. I'd hate to hear you blew the oil filter off of your engine or similar badness........ :2cents:

Diesel oil also has much more of the additives that prevent engine wear. You can (usually) go more than 10K miles on a "diesel" oil change, assuming the engine is in good shape.
It is really a waaaaaste of good money to change diesel rated oil at gasoline rated intervals.
If you do this on a regular basis, you can get oil sampling done that will guide you how long the oil will last.

Joe,
Sounds like you've got it going on....
Yeah, I also let my ol' workhorse warm up before putting the spurs to him.

So do you have any more info on the oil you've got? What type, brand, etc.

Do your research. I wouldn't put diesel oil in any of my gasoline engines because of the observations of a friend and engine builder with engines known to have been run only with diesel oil, and the resulting increase in wear. We're not talking overnight problems, but perhaps shaving 50K miles off of the life of an engine.
Any of the starburst oils of single viscocity (20, 30, 40, 50, etc) or dual viscosity 40 and higher (10w40, 15w50, 20w50, etc) should have plenty of the stuff required for flat tappet engines. I use Valvoline 20w50 gasoline engine oil with no additives and it has been great. When in doubt, consult the manufacturers spec sheet for their oil. There are plenty of gasoline oils that will do the job right.

If you look at most of the common "diesel oils" you'll see they also are rated for gasoline use (SL, SM). :2cents:

I vote that diesel oil will NOT hurt your gas engine.

Ahh....er......I don't know if I know what I'm talking about.
My opinion is only based on my personal experiences of running 15W-40 diesel-rated motor oil in my gasoline engines for years without any adverse effects.

Joey,
I'd suggest you grab up the the good deal on the diesel oil and use it in your Slick's gas engine and don't look back! :steering:
