poor folks driving modern cars

Post by bruceandersson »

One of the many thoughts that went through my head as I drove my new slick from Reno to Ohio was the pity I had for those poor smucks driving new cars with distracting things like modern brakes, radios, weather stripping, seat padding, accurate guages, working wipers....

Well, it gets hot in Reno and they need a/c so that when they drive from LA to Reno to gamble with their Obama bucks they can do so in comfort.

Don't forget the overbearing jackass newby cop, that gives you a ticket for 66 in a 55, and it costs you 30$ extra for that one mph. Most of these young people couldn't drive it accross the street, let alone accross country. Haven't a clue when it comes to how much work it takes and don't care. Haven't driven anything harder to drive than a new car, and have no idea hoow much work and how tiring it can be to drive one of these all day.

everything in my truck works, my seat is quite comfortable and i hate ac.
modern means not having to use a hand crank to start the engine.
todays vehicles are plastic electronic tracking devices

They also never get the enthusiastic thumbs up, or the incredulous questions like you drove that all the way from where? This truck will have everything working like Ice's at some point. I had to take off the passenger side wiper arm and move to the drivers side. No big deal. The truck actually ran great. 15 MPG at 65 MPH with the 352. With the heater vent, kick panel vent, vent window and window - I never needed A/C. As most of you recall A/C did not becaome such a standard item until they eliminated the vent windows and ran hot water to the heater core whether it was needed or not.

We drive the ac car when we travel or we are dressed for an occasion.

For around town driving we are ok without ac most of the time.

Try living in the South on a 100 degree day with 100% humidity and drive around a couple kids and a wore out wife in a car with no ac, when you can afford a car with ac and see how long you stay happily married.

Now our kids, they will not drive a car without a key fob. Im ok with that, they dont live with us, they work, its their money. I wonder if they know what the shiny round thing is under the door handle?

Ive experianced the you drove that all the way here going to slickstock twice but you would have to see my truck to understand. Also did the wiper fix in a thunderstorm on the way to slickstock once. 8)

I'll admit I'm torn...I love the simplicity and the feeling of engagement driving old iron. If I lived in a place that didn't dump salt on the roads 4 months out of the year I'd probably drive vintage year round. And yet, when I get in a modern Ford pickup for a few miles, I have to admit my aging person kind of likes the instant starting, smooth power delivery, supple ride and wildly superior handling and braking. Even if the engines blow spark plugs out, lol.

Part of the appeal for me is knowing how to fix just about anything that goes wrong. Pop the hood on a new Ford and see if you recognize much. Looks more like a bad spill at the wholesale hardware supplier.

Old Ford trucks (and Ford tractors) can be maintained with a toolbox you can still carry with one hand.

I don't mind the ride. I think my '66 1 ton with the straight axle handles better on curves than my "twin I beam" '66 1/2 tons.

And I am a transplant damnYankee sure 'nough. Born in MinneSNOWta, now loving the South. As was mentioned earlier, with all the vents, wing windows and sliding rear windows, most days are fine without A/C.

But you are spot on with the femaie family types and their hangups over "shiny and new". So what? All they know how to do these days is FaceBook, Twitter and Pandora...

I built mine to be a simple, stupid ak 47 of a truck. Right now the most annoying thing I have going on on my truck is that the turn signal switch is worn out to the point that it does not click when you center it and the cancelling cams are broken. I have a new one on order, and pretty much everything else works. I am installing back up lights too.

My kids except for the 16 yr old like the truck. My 10 year old likes it when I give her a ride to the bus stop in it. The oldest likes it, her stepdad had a 65 before he died. The hater is one of those who will have a lot of shiny crap when she grows up and debt to match.
For every person with a spark of genius, there are a hundred with ignition trouble

My '63 short wrongbed

"The Iron Rhino"
300 I6, 3 spd manual, DS II/ HEI ignition.

Stuff I added to Hints and tricks

-300-6 choke tube repair
-duraspark II/ HEI
-Horn ring contact tube repair
-turn signal indicator fix

Mikhail Kalashnikov and Nikola Tesla are the guys i think of when i build things.

I prefer my older stuff too.
Even though I like my 92 Ranger I think I'd much rather drive an older truck all the time.
I don't go up to the city that often and I work 2 miles from home so fuel mileage isn't that much of an issue anymore.
I'd like to have a nice decent 65 with a straight 6 - I'd convert the brakes, add a Pertronix, and probably at some point stuff an M5OD up in it.
As long as the paint was OK I spray the bottom with Magnet paint and just drive it.
There are days I consider making the 64 a little less "toy" and a little more "truck" and just drive it.
1964 F 100 - I am going to do "something" with it.......
