need help on brake switch

Post by cwindsor »

Okay guys I am lost...

I have a single wire brake switch on the new MC valve... I rewired the truck with an american auto wire setup.

The problem I have is I have running lights and can't get the brake likes to work???

It is a SINGLE wire brake switch at the Proportion valve.

I have two wires marked brake switch one is always hot and the other nothing...

Is the 12+ brake wire suppose to go to the brake siwtch? Then what?

I think one sides hot 12v and when you apply brakes (pressure) it complets circuit and turns lights on.

If you have a proportioning valve with a single wire connector in it its usually for a warning light. Your brake switch always has to have a hot in and a wire to the turn signal switch out like a light switch in your house. You will either need to put a regular pressure switch in at the master cylinder or install a mechanical switch at the pedal assembly.

#1
the single wire switch at the proportioning valve is not a brake light switch but a brake pressure warning light switch

#2
have two wires marked brake switch one is always hot and the other nothing.

the 12v + is the power in side to either a pedal monted switch or a 2 prong hydraulic switch used on the single pot master cylinder
the other wire is the out side and travels up the steering column to the turn signal switch where the brake and turn signals are operated thru the t.s, switch. you will need to add a brake light switch. if you jump the 2 wires together you will see the brake lights come on.

Would you go with the pedal switch or cut the lines and add a tee and sensor... The brakes have been bleed and work fine. Also has anyone tried the pedal switch on these trucks?

i have done both

pedal switch is a little more time consuming but not a big deal

the correct tee requires no cutting, just the addition of a short length of brake line between the mc and tee.

I agree with Iceman. The pressure switch is easier. If you choose this option remember to install the switch between the master cylinder and the proportioning valve. That valve has residual pressure valves built in that keep a small amount of pressure in the lines so sometimes it interferes with the pressure switch operation.
