I'm probably going to cut the bumper down, but i was thinking about making one from 2x6 steel.

I made the trip to the alignment shop and she's all straight. Then we jumped on the highway for a little romp, and that's where things went south. A couple of loud backfires and a stall. I coasted to the shoulder thinking I ran out of gas, until I found there was no spark. Turns out the drive gear fell off the bottom of the distributor, and disintegrated the rotor. The distributor was pulled, gear re-installed and a new cap and rotor put on. Timing re-set and its back up and running. Now I just have to figure out the rear bumper and tailgate situation. The original tailgate is in bad shape and I might just use it as decoration in the garage. I'm thinking of making one out of wood to match the bed. It rides so nice with the new front end and power steering. I have to tweak the exhaust because its hitting the transmission crossmember.

Do you have a high volume oil pump in the engine? I've seen time and time again where they cause distributor gear problems, just like you described.

Yes it is a ford racing high volume unit. The stock pump didn't fit with the rear sump oil pan.

Well it turns out that I probably didn't have the distributor hold down tightened enough, and it rotated out of position. I also forgot to tighten the header flange bolts because the down pipes fell off!!!

The Truck turned out great!
I may have missed it but, what was the fix for the header to oil pan clearance problem?

What distributor did you use?

Does it have a bottom section that "snaps" onto the main distributor shaft? There are a few universal distributors out there with this little stub attachment at the bottom end to make one distributor fit several engines with different stubs used.

There is no way a normal distributor could have the gear "fall off" without it breaking the gear in half first.

thank you. I wound up attacking it with a cutoff wheel and welding it up. If I get motivated this winter, I'll drop the pan, drill a new hole and put the dipstick tube in.

Brought the driveshaft in today to get rebuilt. Turns out the Mustang II front end brought my engine up a few inches, so I need a longer driveshaft. Also, I melted the trans cable because it was resting on the exhaust.....more trial and error. The good news is that it is running great!! The carb needed a little tweaking. it idles so smoothly. I have the timing set at 12* BTDC. It is staying between 180 and 190 degrees, on a 90 plus degree day no less. Also, it seems the ceramic coating I got on the headers is holding up nicely. no change in color and I put a couple hundred miles on already.

That is why I always have at least 4 going at all times! (not always car/truck related)
