Unibody decode

Post by jercasche »

I was out looking at someone's collection and found two unibody trucks.
I tried to look up the door tag but can not find anything.
f10yk851729. It has a 3 spd on the floor and a y block.

I'm having a little trouble with that one:
F10= 2wd half ton (F100) Y= 743 c.i. Cummins, not likely to be found in a uni; and 851729 is waaay too high a production number to be assigned to a uni! This info is direct from Autolite parts manuals and Ford repair manuals; so there should be some degree of accuracy between both "official" sources.
Going forward to 1966, s/n 851729 would be a 352- engined F100 made in Kansas City in April 1966, but certainly should not be a unibody, nor a y-block!
Sounds kinda like a case of incorrect door tag, which in the case of a uni, would be the first clue, since the early unis did not have a door tag. Do you know if the door is in fact the uni design (straight horizontal crease below belt line)?

It appears that someone replaced the tag or the door. It is a uni for sure. It will not let me post pics.

For photos, using the attachment feature on this site is "iffy" at its best. Try uploading pics to something like Photobucket and then dropping the IMG (or IMG thumb) code into your post/comment.

The door tag on the uni is definitely wrong as there were no door tags on Uni's . Look on the inside of the glovebox door for another tag as that's where the tag would have been on a Uni.

Have to call you on that one Rick. The 61 and AFAIK the 62 had the glove box warranty tags and the 63's had door tags. (I have both a 61 and a 63 Uni).

Pretty sure that the warranty tag placement wasn't Uni specific.

Agree with grits.
I also believe the Y in the code was the plant the truck was built, not the engine. LMC catalog has a few pages that help decipher the codes.

Grits is correct as stated earlier. Pretty sure it's going to be a '66 door. If the glovebox data plate is present, please post and we will decipher the original equipment.
Richard, all sources I know of list as follows:
Fourth digit is engine, fifth is plant. http://home.earthlink.net/~threynolds2/ ... s6166.html
Three Ford service manuals and one Autolite parts catalog also agree. I'm not aware of any "Y" truck plant back in those days.
