well, got the headers and got the hammer :bangin: and now the headers will fit(sorta) had to move the tranny lines and then the damn thing wouldn't move. bs.jpg Talk about being bummed, :cussing: so i dropped the pan and tried a filter and fluid change.......NO luck. wasn't getting any fluid to pump, so pulled the tranny out yesterday and did an autopsy, the pump has serious issues, guess i'll be getting the tranny rebuilt, probably should have done it to start with. but on the bright side......she sounds really good with open headers 8) . Mama seems to think its too loud(she's NOT a gearhead in the least), she just don't know no better!

ended up rebuilding the tranny (with my friends help) and youtube and a motors book...............talk about something sucking the BIG one. took me 3 days to do what a tranny shop can do in two hours, got it back in tonight . had to get a torque converter also cause some metal fell out of it and i had just worked too damn hard to let the converter ruin it again. still sounds awesome with the open headers tho :D . gonna get a guage and set the pressures b4 i drive it , the aod's are so finicky. but doing the tranny was a learning lesson and i had never done one b4. not too bad if you had ALL THE RIGHT TOOLS!!!!! guess that's all for now.................Jeff

couldn't get the pressures where they need to be, :cussing: starting to get pissed off @ this tranny , guess that's what i get for being frugal(cheap) this thing has fought me tooth and nail :boxing: throughout this entire build. think maybe i should have a heart to heart with the truck (and maybe show the ol girl my FOR SALE signs). bummed, Jeff

FINALLY..... i have a transmission that works :!: it only took a month and a 1/2 but i guess it was all for learning reasons, and boy, did i learn alot. you never take for granted that a new part , even if it comes from a parts house , in a box, necessarily doesn't fit perfect . got her out for the maiden voyage today and it went thru the gears ok, still need to take her out and stretch her legs a little and see what she is made of . i know the speedo ain't right. ran it today with open headers, sounds real good sitting in the garage but it's too damn loud for me going down the road so i guess i gotta get some pipe and mufflers. hopefully get to do some test drives soon. gotta get a lot of bare metal covered first. and see about getting some hiway gears, don't think 3.70s are gonna cut it.
well that's all for now, Jeff

Well the 3.70s are probably history, Steve. Got some exhaust on the truck and I heard this God awful noise, :cussing: 1st thing I thought of is........this damn transmission is killing me, :bs: cause it sounded like it was coming from right under me. Pat came over and we took her for a spin and came back , jacked up the rear end and came to the conclusion that it was in the rear axle. broke that down and boy did it stink, not like regular rear end grease stink................this stuff was awful!!!! I've had rear axles apart b4 and NEVER have I had one smell like that , so now I gotta find a 9" center section. It seems this truck isn't happy with what I'm trying to do with it, I actually thought about putting a manual trans back in it, and I REALLY don't want to do that, I shift gears all day.

Aaron, Steve, thanks for your support :)

went to look at a rear end and box and ended up getting a 3rd member. it's got 3.89 gears but it'll get me rolling. think i might rebuild the old one with some 3.25s or something close. the guy didn't know about this site, so i HAD to inform him about the best bunch of guys on the interweb :) .he's got a 64 4x4 and has a rust free cab sitting in his shop, as he says, waiting for the other cab to finish rusting. also has a 58 he's doing . and he's a purist, doesn't put brand X parts on his fords. i posted his box and stuff for him in the for sale area if anyone is interested. Happy Birthday U.S.A. Jeff

I was in your neighborhood Tuesday again. Went to Bennington to look at a '37 Ford coupe.

I think with the OD tranny you will be fine with the 3.89 gear. I have a nice 3.50 gear set that needs put on a carrier. Let me know if you want that to build.

Get that thing running and driving.

hey steve, congrats,
well got her to roll without making all kinds of nasty noises..............finally, but the speedo is WAAAAY off. i'll figure that out.
my neighbor sold his 35 all ford truck and bought a 39 ford coupe with a brand x drive line he let me drive it today and even if it is brand x that huffer on top sure makes it tolerable. Jeff1168511686116871168811689116901169111692brand x 355 with a B&M 177 supercharger

well i went to north dakota and made a little $$, now i've got a dakota front end kit coming and i'm ready to tear "therapy" apart.....again.
should get the kit on mon. have the front clip off already and everything lose except the fuel line. will get to that tomorrow and pull the engine
and tranny out and then start hacking and slashing the stock stuff off. if anyone needs a good stock front axle , i don't need this one any longer.
it seems to work real good and has alot of new parts,ie: brake shoes, cylinders and the king pins are in real good working order. i tried to post a pic
but the site wouldn't let me. i'll try to keep y'all updated. Jeff

I have been following your build since you joined...great job, its nice to see all that enthusiasm!
Tell me did you have a full set of screws and clips for your trans cover and what did you use to replace missing parts?

it originally came with no hole in the floor think it was column shift , so i just found out where i needed the shifter and cut a hole i used a shifter out of an Aerostar but not the cable, it didn't want to work so we usded a airpump bracket from a 460 and formed it till it fit, not it's a, as Mopar said it, direct connection
