67 tailgate, really?

Post by didgeytrucker »

Is the 67 tailgate really a 67 part? It shows up on so many 66s I believe it was available near the end of production. Why does this 66 on ebay have the 67 tailgate? Build date is Dec 1965.

Many, Many reasons 67 tailgate, lot of people do not really know that there love of the truck has the wrong gate on it and cannot face the fact they where lied to when the person selling it told them Oh it's all original,, Or cannot afford the correct tailgate for 64/66,, Or do not read Dennis Carpenter's Catalog or LMC 'S Fine print that says those little words on the 67/72 tailgates that it fits 64/66 , THAT Does not make it right,, I cannot tell you how many 67/72 gates are on 64/66 trucks another reason is since they do fit the 64/66 trucks and the 67/72 gates are more plentiful out there or least the 67/72 gates are more reasonable price than the 64/66 gates are

Nearly a half century of truck usage can be hard on tailgates. The '67/72 are more readily available; as Tom stated; thus a bunch of slicks end up with them.
As to being OEM on '66's, I doubt that since the '67 version originally carried a C7 part number.

The 67-72 gate also has the raised body line up on the top panel of the gate. Personally i think they blend so well on our trucks I really don't even consider them wrong. We are just lucky as heck that we have them to use.Because heaven knows we have not had much for sheet metal available for 40 years !

Does this tailgate look like it was swapped? I bought a 66 Custom Cab over 15 years ago with the "wrong" tailgate. If it was swapped, it was swapped when the truck was new. I think this was also a 66 Custom Cab tailgate.

There will always be arguments about what happened at the beginning or end of a run of vehicles.. We will probably never know on many of the questions. Someone needs to find a couple people that worked on those assembly lines to know...

Strangely enough Mercury carried the old font thru the 67 and 68 model year. Here's my truck with a 67 merc gate on it. I still have the original for the 64 too, If I have room I will bring it to slick stock to sell.
Buck up Joey. I hear there are trucks with the wrong engines in them too. Maybe thats just a rumour

ALAN, Leeroys green gate is correct for 64/66 trucks,, NEXT No such thing as a 66 custom cab tailgate,, and most likey no new truck came down the line with a 67/72 gate,, now on some of the they might have the raised lip like a 67/72 but had the 64/66 stamped letters on that gate and remember that these trucks where built as needed and ordered so if the truck would need the correct tailgate it would sit till right gate was put on truck and this is due to the fact that Ford Trucks and Cars took 2-3 months to be built and you the customer had to wait for it to come in,, My uncle/dads trucking had to order months in advance to get trucks,, my mother had Ford Station Wagon used for Taxi Service and same way months to get the cars, those days are not like today where everything is on lot

Tom, that is why I avoided mentioning the "character line" in my description. I have seen that line with the early font, but never was sure if they were "assembly line". As you stated, most were built to order, so there may have been a "tailgate delete" option on the DSO. Our transfer wreckers came to the outfitters without tailgates or tail lamps in the styleside beds. They had the hang-on tail lamps like the Flaresides.
Some tailgates may have been removed for slide-in campers and later replaced with whatever was readily available.

Mine has the wrong gate by choice I guess you could say... this one was rust free and I couldn't find a right gate... not even a usable rusty one.. Lewis had me one but the only good part was the letters..... everything else would have had to have been replaced or rebuilt...my wrong gate and Zaks right gate...

In all fairness, my 72 crew cab has the 64/66 gate on it , came that way when I bought the truck and I like it mostly I think the 64/66 gates look better but it is to each owns likes on the gate issue
