My Monster Go Kart Build

Post by MadMaxetc »

I have not been working on my Slick much...I kind of got distracted on a go kart project.

A guy at work sold me an old Bombardier Rotax snowmobile engine and transmission for $100. To cool not to make a go kart out of!!

Rotax Type 305. 295cc, 2 cyl, 2 stroke. 8500rpm max

It runs!!!

The trans was locked up and needed to be fully R&R'd. While trying to fix it, I broke it. A different guy at work happens to have a 4-axis CNC machine in his garage and wanted something hard to make, so I modeled it up and let him have at it! I think it turned out great!

Here is the vision of what the end result will be. Top speed of 50mph.

I was inspired by this one.

Piles of parts!

I have most of the frame laid out and welded, as well as the trailing arm.

I hope to have it done for SS!

Quite a project, Dan! I hope to see it at SS! Kinda reminds me of a miniature Ariel Atom!

That is crazy cool... and something I can't wait to see run !

When I was just a young kid in JR. high a friend took me out to his Uncles house.. this guy had a CART that was using a Volkswagen motor and transmission.. the axles had been cut way down and if I recall it was about 4 feet wide or so. It was broken while I was there and I never saw it run.

Dan, the gas powered golf cars I used to rebuild had a drive set up
just like that. They work very well and it looks like you have a great design.
Can't wait to see it completed. Cool build! TR

Budget is $1,000, but I am only at $700 right now.

The Rotax has an alternator on it. I think it has 15A...so break lights and headlights are in the plans.

I got some more done today...

Main frame is fully welded. I started to clean up the welds.

Started to build the jack shaft and transmission mounts.

Image Image Image Image

I plan to add a web in the center and mount the chain tensioners the snowmobile used.

Pretty cool! Is there an advantage to having the rear wheels inside the frame like that as opposed to outside? Seems less stable? Maybe I'm just letting my own driving get in the way... :-P

So I have got a little bit more done on this thing...

Got the web in and the brake bracket positioned.
Image

Engine sled built and frame cage ruffed in.
Image

I mounted the shocks like this...but I don't like how high it sits, so I am going to move them.
Image
Image

I also got the seat build and the front control arms and spindles made.
Image

I hope to get the shocks re-mounted and the steering fabricated this weekend!

Very cool project! And, it looks like you will have it completed just in time for the release of the new Mad Max movie.

Would only have been cooler if you'd have put a twin I-beam suspension under the front end. Just kidding... Looking good. Keep the updates and pictures coming.
