223 dizzy swap help needed
I have been reading info here, ford barn, ford six performance, hamb ect.
Has anyone here replaced the load-a-matic distributor on a61 223 I6, for one that has centrifigal as well as vacuum advance?
What is the easiest cheapest way to do so? I have read info on 300 swaps, but would like a guide for the complete idiot version on the 223.
Pertronix is fine, as well as duraspark so long as it is quick and easy.
Thanks All.
John

John - I put in the pertronix ignition on my '56 223 6 cylinder 2 years ago and am very happy with the improvment in how well it runs and accelerates. I also have a K&N air filter on it and this past summer I had Daytona Parts restore a spare stock Holley carburator for it. And am very happy with thier product as well. I am planning on getting her out more this comming summer now that it is a lot more reliable. When I did the ignition mod I also put on the recommended fresh plug wires and coil. It runs surprisingly well for the crap they sell for gas now.

If you have a machinist available you can do it. You will have to have them ream out the distributor gear to fit the 300 distributor. The gear off of a 64 223 is already reamed out to that size. You will also need the 64 223 oil pump because it is 5/16 inch drive, like the distributor.

Re: 223 dizzy swap help needed
Im not familiar with a 223, but there are 2 options that work on a y block.
Take a salvage yard duraspark dizzy and swap the internals. You will have to grind a notch in the 223 housing for the harness.
Disassemble both dizzys and install the 223 shaft on the duraspark body.
Like I say, these are the popular options for a y block.

John, I don't believe the Pertronix itself is limiting performance. If you were to find an earlier non- Loafamatic distributor and install a Pertronix, i believe you would see a vast improvement, especially with a replacement carb.

Re: 223 dizzy swap help needed
I did not mean to imply the pertronix was limiting performance.
I am using the 2 barrel from a y block on a 223 I6 and the distributor will not work with the carb.
If I order the 64 gear or find a 64 with a 300, my only problem would be the oil drive?
You would think someone would do a plug and play for people like me.

Re: 223 dizzy swap help needed
Not just oil drive shaft but pump unless you can find a step-down drive. You can modify other applications to work, but it would probably take some effort to duplicate the performance of an earlier drop-in distributor. I don't know what exact carb you are using , but all you need is a ported (above throttle blades) vacuum source for the dist vacuum advance. You could tweak one to run just centrifugal advance but fuel economy and cruise would likely suffer.

Re: 223 dizzy swap help needed
Paul,
I am using the Autolite 2100 similar to the Holley 2300, on the Clifford set up. They came out of y blocks, I did not want to go to a 4v.
Do you know what years the vac/centrifugal distributors came out of?
