NO SLICK NEEDS A 390!!
A 302 is not particularly well-suited to towing anything of size. 14-foot boat, sure. A 17-foot boat is marginal. Put a truck camper on and try to pull that 17-foot boat and you're going to have problems. Too much weight and too much drag for a 302 to combat. A fifth wheel or mobile home? Yeah right!
And new F-150's come with a 4.2, not a 3.8...

That's like saying nobody needs sneakers because loafers will get you where you're going just as well. I think everyone here is doing different things with their trucks. I plan on using mine as a truck when it's finished and want to be able to do what a truck needs to do - haul/carry with a little bit of git. In that regard, I think a 351W is perfect for that.

Doc your tourettes is acting up again. You might need to go sit down in the shade, oh wait you live in Arizona, you don't have any of that there. Any way sit down, rest, and stop thinking. It is making your brain hurt. I have a 390 in my truck because I can. I am going to a bigger engine because, again I can. You are fine to go ahead with your mediocrity and keep your little 6 banger. Its fine, we don't judge here. Just stay in the slow lane. Again its OK Doc, you are OK. SSSSHHHHH....
Cheers,

my 292 Y block gets along pretty well even with the 4.56.
the wifes built 352 and 3.50 rear is quite impressive.
but the 65 towtruck with the bored out 390 is a screaming demon.
i have had cars and trucks with 6s, and even some with 429/460.
i have driven all over the USA and Canada.i have come to one conclusion
There is no substitute for cubes

All Slicks should have had 390's right outta the chute!

I agree with you completely Doc. I have a nice 240 in mine. It runs very well, and when I have the money I'll rebuild and install it. I may even make a few minor power adjustments to help on those big hills when hauling a load.
Let's see, Aussie head, stelite valves, a .80 overbore, 300 stroker kit, a new intake with maybe a little four barrel and a turbo? No a blower (looks better) If I can just bump it up to about 500 HP.
Yer 100% right I dont need a 390. Screw the gas mileage this is my TOY
Doc.... Doc.... are you alright?

haha DOC, you be off your rockers!!!
When I met Agatha, she had a 223 in her, and she was a wheezy old cow rollin down the road... Yeah. With a stroker kit and a wad of turbos, she mighta made a fair lump of power... or it might have all exploded...
But I'd rather give that treatment to my 390...
A 390 turned 442, with added crossbolts, tight comp pistons and maybe a couple of turbos... now we're talking...
Sure, the 223 drove.... slowly. She shuddered and screamed at 70... That's no way to be cool!

'63 with 390 & lots of juice. But never enough. Always want more.

I am guessing you are referring to a 350 Cummins? That is 855 cubic inches.
Thanks for this post Doc, I am more motivated than ever to build a 600 cubic inch stroker now, 1 to 2 MPG and a heavy dose of testosterone. 4 inch side exit exhaust should be very pleasant when I pull up and idle next to you on my way to the nearest station with 3 bucks plus/gallon premium fuel.
I second what the Big M says. A 302 wouldn't pull the corn outa my......
JC get the grinder out.
Doc my Uni has a 223, I drove it on the interstate on my way home today. Needless to say nobody else was impressed with my truck topping out at 57 MPH (on the down grades, lol) in a 60 MPH zone, lol. Was kinda fun pissing them off though, lol.

And what parallel universe were we in today? :p
Smallest engine available in the F150 is a 4.2L V6...and you can only get it on a 4x2 regular cab. The 4.6L V8 is the smallest engine if you want a truck with more seats and/or 4WD.
The smallest engine in the Econoline is the 4.2L V6 as well, and it's only available in E150 commercial vans. The 4.6L is the standard engine in the 3/4ton E series and the 5.4L V8 is the standard engine in the 1 ton.
Then again, I shouldn't expect our older members to have much interest in new trucks they can't work on.

I move along very nicely with a Y block.... And they can tow. There was a reason they were in these trucks, and that's because they have a ton of torque.
Oh yeah, did 85 uphill today in 4th @ 4K rpms.

In interests of truth, fact, honesty & on reading hyperbole, smoke & off thinking this misinformed thread is based on:
I often do 75 @ 2575 RPM all day long uphill or down, pulling a trailer, loaded or not. With no load on my trailer,
I get 17.5 mpg overall avg on 87 octane, while running E-legal. HMmmpf,
. . . . . . Go Figure that one, Huh?
Plus traffic is not forced to bunch up while trying get around or pass me because I can't keep up on "boulevards",
where the posted Speed Limit is 70 or 75 Mph.
To speculating, guessing, delusional & uninformed folks, E-Legal means Emissions Legal.
Sometimes I run "E-Legal Drags" where vehicles are required to meet EPA Emissions standards.
Unfortunately I can't meet CAFE standards. When my engine left FoMoCo's Plant, the only CAFEs around
were those on the roadside in Western USA.
Oh yeah, I almost Forgot, I'm stuck with 1 of those dang, cursed, evil, 385 series engines from early 1970's
that somehow turns rather consistant & efficient 12.6s, while E-Legal. Guess I better take it out &
install a 200-232 etc I-6 (NOT) that can't'keep up with nor out of the way of fast interstate traffic,
has trouble pulling 10K Lbs & more on flatland, not to mention uphill, thru an A/T and worst of all . . .
They won't fit in my truck anyway, huh,
It has nothing to do with testosterone or ego, but has a lot to do with logic, common sense, efficiency,
& most importantly available power for safety, performance & good rationale, doncha see?
