Installing a car 4 speed
My 66 originally had a 4 speed and since I still have all the clutch parts I am wanting to install a car 4 speed when it gets another FE this winter,I thought I read that I would need a 3 speed bellhousing to do that so is that correct,if that is the case anyone have the casting number in case I find some off the vehicles.
Re: Installing a car 4 speed
Hello, I'm not sure of the interchangeability of the two transmissions, but I have a bellhousing from behind a 360 that I sold. The number on this bellhousing is
C5TA 750 -8. The center hole diameter is 4.848". Distance between top transmission mounting bolts center to center is 8-1/2", same for bottom bolts. Distance between top and bottom bolts is approximately 6-3/8".
This bellhousing had an np435 four speed, floor shited transmission, with the super low first gear. But with the measurements, you might be able to check the transmission you want to install and see if it fits a bellhousing with this number.

I have the trans bolted to the bellhousing and it looks like the trans will not reach the end of the crank.probably will have get a car bellhousing or go back to a truck trans.

Re: Installing a car 4 speed
if you find a ford small block toploader there is no need to change the truck bellhousing. the input shaft is the right length. you may have to drill and tap the bellhousing for the bolt pattern of the small block transmission. that is the easiest and cheapest way to install a toploader in to your pickup. o/w if using a big block toploader in factory form you need to source a FE "Z" bellhousing from a 390 GT or CJ or thereabouts. they run around $400 or so. versus $50 for a C5TA. I have 6 or 8 C5TA's and one "Z" bellhousing not in use.66camperspecial wrote:My 66 originally had a 4 speed and since I still have all the clutch parts I am wanting to install a car 4 speed when it gets another FE this winter,I thought I read that I would need a 3 speed bellhousing to do that so is that correct,if that is the case anyone have the casting number in case I find some off the vehicles.

Re: Installing a car 4 speed
I have decided to put a truck 4 speed back in since I might sell or trade it in the future,I do not want to get it set up for the car trans and then have to put a 3 speed in to sell it.
