Oil? We don’t need dont need oil!

Post by shipwrecked »

Well, we made it 8 hours into patrol when a nasty casualty on a propulsion shaft occurred.

We conducted about 9 drills, and were moving at a good speed. I was in the control room and heard a squeak. It was slight and not often. I asked what it was and no one seemed to hear it over the ambient noise coming from the huge engine room.

Squeak squeak..... squeak squeak squeak squeak! Got louder and we all got looking around but by then it was too late.
I was one foot out the door as it went kaboom.
All machinery was shut down as we checked for fire it was so nasty.

Seeing nothing, smelling nothing and hearing nothing! Weird... but that’s when we heard GE alarm and smoke in our storeroom which was right behind the engineroom. One you have to go 50 feet forward and up a ladder, back 75 feet then down thru two compartments to get to.
Found the problem. The oil supply line to a bearing worked its way shut and overheated. That caused the kaboom..
System was inside the casing so we couldn’t see what it’s consution was and it wasn’t good.

The bearing was a roller ball bearing, like giant hockey pucks riding on a sleeve.

No one was hurt thankfully.

We locked up the gear and need to inspect that but we need to go on blocks and pull the shaft and bearing. We are looking at a month repair and immediate patrol after. I probably won’t be back to my house till October after tomorrow.

My relief letter was submitted that morning as we got underway. The xo being snarky wrote “you might regret this” but had no idea what we were about to face...

My guys are getting a sea story out of it for sure.

I’d chop this up to shipyard negligence. The oil valve has a safety pin latch on it, but who ever installed it decided the pin was too hard to operate and just wrapped it around the shaft. Allowing it to shut itself.

That is so frustrating.

Well..... at least ya didn't have any Nazis chasing you...

Being self employed
Every breakdown from negligence , or abuse
Comes out of my pocket & creates more work for me
....
Oil & grease are dam cheap in the long run

Which brings me to another point :o
When you here a wrong sound ...
Or feel a different vibration
Or a peculiar odor....

You really need to investige it !

If that bearing would have been caught
Maybe......
A little grease smeared on it would have made it last back to land....

Trust your gut feeling , and investigate !
Worst that can happen is a little waste of time , if nothing is out of tune

The first squeak to kaboom was roughly 1minute. Not everyone could hear what I heard at first.

We were actually in the middle of a drill when I heard the first squeak. The layout of this ship is odd. No direct path between machinery spaces and it was quick destruction at 9 knots speed off NC.

You can’t see the bearing without the cover off and shaft secured and locked. It hadn’t no chance once that valve vibrated shut. It’s an oil bath system. With no way to see if flow was going. All we had was a temp gauge and r15 minutes before the kaboom, the watchstander made the round and recorded temps, saw and smelled nothing out of ordinary. The valve with safety pin lock was not visible unless you unbolt a deckplate.

Possibly something that needs protocol changed ...
Visual inspection every 1000 hrs ?

Still in the shipyard. I don’t have a way to check this forum unless I have WiFi and it’s mostly a email or a quick Facebook view while I’m onboard. Few more weeks and we should be out there. It’s hot as heck here in Baltimore.

Lot s of changes happening in the engineering department because I’m finding a lot of things that are not in compliance with standards. Swift but warranted changes.

Making progress.

Took the weekend off and came home. Was hoping my head bolts would be here- but still lost in Narnia.

Here is one of the roller bearings- this one cooked!

The ship is being buttoned up as of now. They started welding in the hull plate.

and the thurst shaft is in place.

We float again this coming week. Sail for offshore to do a shakedown and then return home. We will do preps and set sail. I'll be back at thanksgiving.

I feel terrible my dogs are in foster care for 5 full months instead of the 2.5 they were supposed to be. You may understand but dont feel this as deep as I do.

Its very tough to keep a good attitude right now.
