Pinion seals and search

Post by Anthony »

Needing advice from experts. I have replaced both front and rear pinion seals. Have also replaced the front seal for the front driveshaft in the transfer case. The transfer case front seal and both Pinion Seals are still leaking. The rear has had a sleeve put on it to try and stop it but it is still leaking. What are my options?

Assuming the bearings are tight, new seal and a new yoke. Are you sure they are leaking past the seals and not somewhere else.

If you can get a part number you will find the parts easy to come by thanks to the internet.. I found a new 1450 u joint yoke on sale cheap for my Dana 60. Stumbled across the part number on a build thread for a rock crawler. . By shear luck and a Google search for "Dana 60 1450 u joint". Searched eBay with the part number and fount three new.

Your BOM numbers (stamped on the axel tube)should give you a parts list and numbers. From the Dana web site. They move their pages around on their site regularly, so I can't provide a link.

Good luck Anthony.

Was there wear on the yokes , that the seal rides on ?
Ive seen some pretty worn stuff seal up... if ... they are smoothed out
Polish them up with emery cloth

What weight oil are you running ?
Thicker oil wont get by a seal as easy....

Your not overfilling ?

I will look for part numbers FMS would love to find new yokes.. running 90wt gear oil in the rear end and trans case Pat.. they are grooved pretty bad.. I bought a sleeve repair for the rear and it seems to be working, just having trouble getting parts counter to understand what I am looking for... not overfilled? I was always told to fill till it came to the hole? does that sound right? remember, I am just that shadetree guy that took on a BIG project about 14 or so years ago and I am still working on her...
but need this fixed before the tip to Marshalltown next year

***Check diff vent to verify it's not plugged, if it is, diff will "pressure up" and end up kicking some fluid out along with the air.........
