How Are Your Torque Returns From A Modified 240/300?

Post by chris401 »

Hello,
I have ran my old FE on over a dozen 1,200 mile round trips in the past two years. Now I am kicking around the idea for a good gasoline powered replacement other than the 430 MEL. From my tech days I remember customer's 300 6's being dead reliable if they didn't overheat them. Just check the oil and change the exhaust manifold. Are you guys/gals able to get 400+ lbs of torque while keeping the reliability?
Thank's
Chris

I think most streetable 300 builds end up at around 300 lbs of torque.

they're usually fine stock.they're made for pulling.i have a 91 f150 thats my daily driver with a 300 and 5spd.today i just loaded 2500lbs of scrap metal in the bed and it pulled itself in 5th gear just as easily as if it was unloaded.they're not great on gas but not alot you can do about it.my odometer broke about 5 years ago but i know if only averaged 5k miles a year it should have around 200k on it and ive never touched the inside of the engine.

When my buddy & I went on a vacation in his 85 f150 2wd 3 spd
I was the co-pilot ( no gps back then )
I kept records for the fuel & mileage
He was a easy driver & that truck got over 20 mpg
The entire trip (drove about 1500 miles)
With some tanks getting 25 mpg

No loads , but going thru the hills
It kept up with everything else easily

There was talk of an aftermarket cylinder head a few years back. Now that the full size trucks are offering a V6 that will likely feed an interest in the old I and V6 engines.

my 66 300 block is 60 over with an 84 head that has been re-worked. the cam was ground for more torque. Power Tech Racing Engines in Ashland KY built it for me. I am running a clifford 6=8 intake with a 500cfm 2 bbl that the engine guy went through and matched to his build. I am running the 86 EFI split exhaust manifolds. I get 11-12 mpg loaded or unloaded with my 7000lb truck with all time 4wd. (just disconnected at transfer case) I built her to be a work horse. I have 4:10 gears and she likes to travel about 60ish mph. I have had her to Kansas with the camper and hauled a truck home from Mississippi with her. I live in West Virginia. she has been to Iowa, Indiana, Tennessee, and South Carolina. my horse power is around 290 and my torque is around 300Lbft Image
