How Much Tongue Weight Can The Frame Handle?

Post by chris401 »

Nothing on the road, I am going to move a mobile home around on the property. I estimated the tongue weight to be just under 700 lbs but assuming 900. My rear bumper is a custom 1/2" metal with the ball up close to the truck flush inside not protruding and bolted up with grade 5 bolts/nuts with 1½" X ⅜" grade 5 washers on the frame side. I have no concerns about the bumper or fasteners or drivetrain.

With an F-250 fleetside bed has the group ever put too much on the frame rails or can they handle 900 to 1000 lbs with a ridged bolt on bumper?

One of those do you wished you hadn't questions. Thank's

putting a 1000# on the bumper
would be similar to putting 2000# in the bed
i think the frame will be fine......
the bumper itself might not ... depends on how well its constructed

I moved one years ago with a pickup, not on the road. First went to use my 78 F150 4x4, class 3 trailer hitch bolted to the frame and extra leaves in the rear spring pack. Lowering the tongue jack it took the back of the truck right down to the axle snubbers. Switched over to my brothers 77 F250 Highboy. Still a really heavy load on the back but better than the F150. Used 4x4 low range. Not sure I'd hook up to a bumper hitch. Both of these trucks had frame mounted receiver hitches and extra spring capacity. I actually towed a tri-axle construction trailer with a Case 480B backhoe on it using the F150 but the mobile home was just to much.

]This skid is 2600 lbs.
Trailer is about 2-2500 lbs
Probably 6-700 lbs young weight.
I have had 4000 lbs on this trailer with zero issues.
F-250 extra leaves in the rear.

I have a similar bumper pull trailer I haul equipment and cars on but I don't suspect the tongue weight ever gets over 600. I could be wrong, I should weigh the truck weight with a loaded trailer. I have not had any tongue weight within an inch of the axle snubbers. I've bounced off of them more than one load with bed weight. Have a yard of gravel in the bed now with about an inch between the frame and snubbers. My primary springs are tired. Doesn't take a whole lot to set the truck on the overloads.

Thank's for the responses. If it doesn't work out I'll share photos of the aftermath.

if you only plan on pulling it a short distance
(less than a 1/2 mile or so ?)
you could blocks between the frame & axle before
you hook it up....
will make it ride like a tractor
but you wouldn't be using your springs....
still would be weight on the axle bearings & tires

(The Dana 60 rear axle was first introduced in 1955 as a full floating axle in Ford F-250's and is still used today.

Manufactured in both full float and semi float variations. The semi float axles have GAWR up to 5,500 lbs and the full float axles were rated up to 6,500 lbs.) <--- straight from the Wikipedia page.

So the axel is not the weak point. The frame is the weakest and I believe it is at its thinnest at the center of the axel.

So I wouldn't bock it up, just let the springs spread the load as far across the rails as they can....
Your going to loose spring arch, but it is probably about time for those to be changed any hoo...

It will be fine.... At least till you jump that terrace and cross the creek, with it back there.
