I used a piece of 4x4 for the rear spring that was broken when I was about 12 or 13 on my first car

What's the problem? Ford was famous for using wood in thier vehicles longer than any of the big three.... Henry Ford bought the whole dang forest... Heck if that was crammed in a bed cross brace it would be factory!

I call BS! Yes you are correct about Ford buying a whole forest and yes you are correct about the bed spacer thing But...
Ford was the very first company to reduce wood in their vehicles! Why do you think that Fords were so popular to make into hot rods from the 30's well into the 50's? Yup the flat head V8 helped but Ford was the first company to remove wood from their doors and structural members in their bodies. Other companies like GM built their bodies using wood in their structures with the sheet metal nail on well into the 40's. That is why Fords were the most rodded car on the planet.
