Charleston & Orlando guys...

Post by My65 »

Hey guys, me, my wife and 2 boys will be heading your way @ the 16th. We will be in Charelston till the Thursday and then make our way to Orlando. What are some must sees? (besides Disney) We are planning a day for Kennedy, and a day for Sea World. I have heard Charleston has some "Ghost Tours" to die for. Also, I do Old West re-enactments up here and need some new threads. What stores sell the civil war era stuff? (1860-1880)
Also what is a local dish in Charleston that is unique to that area? I don't mean something that will make me up-chuck when I find out what it is (ex.: Rocky Mountain Oysters = pan fried bull testicles)

Thanks,

I live about and hour and a half south of Charleston, and a half hour north of Savannah, and a mile off I-95 in Ridgeland, SC.

Civil War stuff is hard to find in the larger sities, except at re-enactments for reproductions or real stuff at antique stores.

I would highly recommend you visit Fort Sumter, where the hostilities broke out. Make sure you read the real story of the events. Keep in mind the Park Rangers do not tell the entire story, so that you get the exact opposite understanding of what really happen and why it happened. The Rangers are good people, but only tell the story they are allowed to tell.

You may also want to visit the Hunley, the first submarine ever to sink an enemy warship. It is on display there, with a working model to sit inside and try out. The recovery operations are still on-going, and you can see the sub from a platform built up around the preservation tank.

Both of these are reverent components of Confederate history.

Deo Vindice!

You may want to check out Savannah's ghost tours as well! I didn't knwo Charleston had any.
Be advised the Ft. Sumter trip is a boat ride out to the Fort in the harbor. You need to plan a day for it just for a time reserve, but you should have enough time to enjoy a few other sights.
Magnolia Cemetery
Sticky Fingers BBQ restaurant
A note about Southern BBQ: NC BBQ tends to be the most vinegary, and it tends to get sweeter as you head South and West. Memphis and Louisiana tend to have the sweetest BBQ.
SC is an exception, in that it is a largely mustard instead of tomato based BBQ. Not everybody likes it.
Sticky Fingers has BBQ from around the South, so you can have your pick of types.

I'l post more as I think about it.

Being a native of NC I can say that from Charlotte west the BBQ is sweet and AWESOME. The further east you go from Charlotte the more vinegary it is. If you and your family are going to be in Charleston from Sun-Thurs. I really really suggest you try a local (NOT RED LOBSTER) seafood resturant. You cant beat freash seafood! and if you have the time you should travel a little up the coast towards Myrtle Beach, (about an hour and 1/2 away) between Charleston and Myrtle Beach there are wonderful sites to see, Litchfield plantation, (famous for hammocks) Brookgreen Gardens beautiful gorgouse gardens and sculptures. Georgetown (oldest paper mill town in SC) the intercoastal waterway, Huntington Beach state park (AWESOME old castle ruins very near the beach!!) and just south of Myrtle Beach , Merrills Inlet SC home of Mickey Spillane (author of the Mike Hammer Private Eye books..............plus the BEST seafood resturants on the coast!!) Just hit hwy 17 and go north,

I know this because I have lived in Charleston and Myrtle Beach also.

and while in Charleston being you are a civil war buff maybe stop in the Daughters of the Confederacy museum they may have some things for sale or be able to direct you to a place that sells re enactment stuff.

PS when traveling through WNC you need to stop and grab an Iwanna paper and also when you get in the upstate of SC you need to grab an Iwanna paper (they are different for the different areas.........you will be amazed at the cars/trucks/ parts for sale.)
