My crew cab project .... update #11 its a driver!!!

Post by Shiny »

Here it is a couple of days ago.
I had my son helpin to strip it apart.
I have pretty much everything to clip it, diff it etc.
Should go together pretty quick.
Gonna get the chassis all done and get it drivin for now, then do the paint later.
I'll then get onto building my other crew cab into a 4x4 and paint it the same!

Ok guys here you go,
So I did some measuring, figuring and debating and this is what I did.
I'm putting a shortbox on the truck and thought why not move the diff forward and whack the back of the frame off instead of cutting and splicing it. Since I was C notchin it anyways.
So I cut the required amount off of the rear then started makin the c notch
Image
I used some pieces of 3" x 5" x 1/4" tubing, made the notch and welded it onto the frame.
Image
You can see in this photo where weve removed all of the spring mounts, diff etc. You can also see where I've drilled the new holes for where the mounts will be moved forward. I also moved them up an inch.
Image
My 7 yo son Blaze decided to help out and we loaded the 9" into one of his wagons and he pulled it into the shop. My buddy Vince is seen here removing the old spring perches from the '58 Merc nine inch I'm puttin in the crew cab.
Image
Where theres smoke theres fire and were on fire trying to get this thing done!
I've had the crew cab for just about a year now and am finally able to get on it.
With all of the measuring and figuring it'll have about a 7" rideheight at the back of the cab!
I'll get more pics up this week!
Oh and the pics were taking by my 7 year old son Blaze! pretty gooder eh!

Got the '58 merc nine inch in place and had to put the box on to get a look!
What ya think?

Image
This prolly will be around the finall ride height.
I'll put in some bags in the back too.

Image
It only has a 2" step in the box too, not bad eh.

I still am going to move box forward about 3/4" to tighten it up to the cab a bit, its in the stock position now, and then move the diff forward another 1"
And the box aint bolted down, it needs 3/4" spacers in place to lift it up a bit.

On to the front soon!

10 minutes on an Alberta road and you'd be missing an oil pan and your entire muffler system.

Hope they are better in BC,, quite the stance. :thumright:

We gots gooder roads here! And everything will be tucked up above the frame. I don't run mufflers in any cars I build... "mufflers are for lawnmowers!" -Shiny

I'll prolly put an air over leaf bag system in it too.

that's pretty sick... and your kid takes decent pics...

haha FIRE!!! Mwahaha!

Over spring break my cousin almost burned down his house with a grinder and a mess of dead grass. We were making parts for the axle swap in his truck, and had been spraying sparks into this mess of grass for a couple of days, with surprisingly no problems, then all of a sudden I hear crackling over the grinder scream....

Cool stance. I'm curious as to how you're going to finish up the c-notch. Will you be boxing the frame rails and adding some gussets or fishplates?

I'm sure you know what you're doing, btw. Just asking because I've never seen a c-notch done quite like that. :)

blackagatha, I've done the same thing!

Big M, I'll be boxing the frame and adding fish plates too. It won't need gussets though.

SF, I'll be buildin something close to that for my other crew cab. For usre it'll be a turbo deisel chassis.

I should have some pics tonight of my dad-inlaws buddys truck, itsa 66 crew cab on a 79 3/4ton 4x4 chassis with a 300/ 5 speed!

So I got the rear mostly done, gotta final weld the boxing plates etc and get the holes drilled for the shock mounts to go back in.
I pulled the 300/ 4 speed out and put it back up on my tall jackstands. Then cut the frame off of it and got it all cleaned up.
I also pulled the stockl column out for now, it'll prolly go back in. I really like the stock steerin wheel and its a mint black one.
I'll be strippin my donor car one night this week and I hope to have the clip in it this weekend.
Can't wait to get it back on the ground with the clip in it sitting at ride height :D
I'll take some more pics this week too.

I now have the clip in it, motor and trans mounts done, master cylinder mounted, driveshafts figured out.
I also have the inner fenders trimmed and the bumper mounts figured out, what an easy and great fitting install.
I should have the 400/ auto in it this weekend and can put it on the ground, literally 8)

I lost my camera cord or I'd put up some pics.
