need to find front seals for 4x4

Post by sgettin »

hello. i need a couple seals for the front drive train on my truck(63 f250 4x4). i need the rubber and also the felt seals that are located up front on trunion arm(?), or in laymens terms the rubber and the felt seals that are on that round knuckle thing behind each front tire on a 4wd.

my mechanic hasn't come up with any at orielly's but he'll check around tomorrow. i am going to look at dennis carpenter also but if anyone knows where i can get something that will work i would appreciate the guidence.

thanks

I would guess try Green Sales, they sell rebuild kits for alot of old stuff like the 60s Ford power steering set up etc.
Maybe someone else will have a better idea.

i will look up the ford part # later.
i bought a couple set from car-quest and a few sets on e-bay.

kind of a funny story but when i first moved here none of the chain stores i called had a clue. the local store here was independent at the time i went in there and asked, the owner walked back to the shelf and got them without looking in any book, turns out he had a few older ford 4x4s and kept them in stock. later he became part of car-quest. he has since retired but the new owner worked there for years and still has the book knowledge to find that stuff.

lol. i run into the clueless chain store counter person all the time, what makes it especially bad for me is i'm usually as clueless as they are. looks like a couple blithering idiots trying to figure it out.

i did get some information over on fte. seems i'm (hopefully) refering to:

"the large diameter seals that are on the inner side of the 3130 .. Spindle Arm

These parts came in a kit. The same kit fits: 1961/76 F250 4WD's & 1977 F250 4WD's before serial # Y20,001.

2) D4TZ3132B .. Spindle Arm Seal Kit / D4TZ3132B replaced C1TZ3132A / Obsolete"

i don't know if my truck has a 1" dia shaft or 1 1/2" but if thats the same thing you got from carquest then i have another scource i can check.

i did check green sales and unfortunately they didn't have one. did have one other thing i need though so that was good.

thanks

2 sizes, one for the 3000 Lb. front end, larger one for the 3500 lb. front.

if your hubs are tapered its a 3000 lb., if they are straight its a 3500 lb.

Brian that line is so true. I worked in a parts store & a Ford dealership parts department. Before computers were around. It takes a few years to know most of what a person needs to be good at it.

Guy I worked with at the parts store was a walking parts book. Almost never looked in a book just went to the shelf & got the part.

btw they are called knuckle seals.

car quest #s are 710304 and 204005

never throw the boxes or papers like this away, cut the numbers off big boxes or the end flaps with numbers off smaller ones.

then you are able to order by part number

While your mechanic is in there have him check the condition of the threads in the cast housing where the bolts that hold the spindle on are. I have had them pull out. Should they be damaged helicoil repair is the best way to go. I have also had the casting break but I probably use my truck at least as hard as ICE does so please inspect these parts really good they support a lot of weight and need regular inspection.

i was also told by my auto parts guy the spindles are now obsolete.
best to find some spares or a spare front end at a salvage yard.
