What color to paint my wheels?

Post by dotcentral »

A bit off topic, so forgive me. Mods, feel free to move if need be.

This is for my 71 F100 short bed. Currently it is a faded black. Eventually, it may be a light or silver-blue metalic. Maybe similar to the old "Britanny Blue" Ford used in the mid 60's. Body & paint is several years down the road. I will upload a pic of it as is to my album.

I forgot to post a link: http://www.fordtruk.com/forums/album_pi ... ser_id=227

Tires will be a set of 23575r15 my dad gave me, blackwalls all around. I'd love to get some cragars or similar, but with money being tight kind of hard to justify the expense. So, I will use the stock Ford steel wheels. I have a spare set of steel 66 hubcaps that I will redo and use as well.

Choices I am thinking of.

Off White seems to been the stock color.

Red maybe overdone, is sort of the "ratrod" color of choice" (no offense mean't), and probably would look like odd on a silver-blue metalic vehicle.

Black tends to blend in with the tire. Might look good if I could find the chrome spider caps (or whatever they are called) to fit a 5 x 5.5" lug pattern.

Finally, Argent. I sort of think argent would go with Black, silver-blue metalic, or pretty much any other color I might come up with.

I'd go with either red or semi gloss black. You'd be surprised what a nice set of Chrome lug nuts will do with a semigloss black rim. I've searched high and low for the 5 on 5 1/2 spider caps with no luck.

Yeah I voted for the satin black. I had a set of white spokes on a '83 f100 that I painted black. Had a NASCAR look to it after I done that. Too bad it didn't run that way. :(

Hey Red, we're almost neighbors. North Augusta ain't far from Anderson. :)

Either the white or red would look best IMHO.

check into "anthracite". you can google that term along with wheels and see what i'm talking about.
it's kind of a mid hued grey color. i think it would look good on steel wheels.
and i'd only paint my wheels pink if i lived next door to jc and drove a bullit bird.

Well my opinion is black or off white. Not red...just way overdone and in my opinion really takes away from a car. People immediately associate a car as a rat rod when they see red wheels. I dont know why but they do. With that being said it matters which way you want to go. If you want it to look rat roddish then red is a good choice but if you want classic, hot rod, that nature then go with somethign else. When I got my truck I immediately knew red rims were going to have to change. Not that its bad but its everywhere and its not a rat rod in my opinion...

Here is red.....

Black might have been stock in 65, but off white looks better, at least in my opinion. I have a set of each. Below you see the black.

Obviously, you truck and color as well as hub caps are all different.

But, red says rat rod, black says rattle can. Off white looks classy, IMHO

Thanks guys for the ideas and photos.

I agree, red has sort of become a cliche as far as wheel color these days. I am going to use a spare set of 66 hubcaps, like the ones shown here on Cosmo's truck: http://www.fordtruk.com/forums/album_pi ... ic_id=5209

I will paint the background the silver or argent color. and was thinking about either the stock red, or perhaps paint that area to match whatever color the truck winds up being.

So, I am thinking that if I use the 66 hubcaps, Off white might be best. But if I do some type of spider cap or hat like "WhiteyFord" shows in photo one, I would probably do satin black or maybe a darker gray/silver - like ezernut suggests.

Sounds cool. I like the caps on cosmos truck the best. You can get my caps from Coker. Both the bullet style and the 42 ford style caps. I would have gone with spider caps only but my front was a 5x4.5 while my rear is a 5x5.5 so and for somereason the spider caps only come in 5x5.5 but im fine with what I have. I think the off white is cool ...

green wheels look good on a black truck and are a traditional ford color scheme. They also aren't seen much any more so make for an attractive and relatively rare combo.

Whitey, where did you find the spiders at? I went to Coker but couldn't find them in the online catalog.

JC, I agree. Green wheels can look good on a black truck.

these are for 5x4.5...

http://www.echarlottesweb.com/catalog/i ... 623739.htm

i think these are ready to sell....same for the 4.5

http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/show ... p?t=435649

so i had it turned aroundd...they have them 4.5 bolt patterna dn not 5.5. However, there is a guy on the HAMB and I think its wheelkid or something and he did a little screwing around about making a spider cap kit for the 5.5 or a conversion type set up where it covers the holes, something.

ok must be5x4.5 only. isnt that weird they only have this for 5x4.5.....all of the crap we have for cars and this is converted or made yet. Anywho I hope this helps a little or did I show the obvious????

I had seen people ask about 5x5 1/2 spiders on the Hamb before, but never recalled seeing an answer.

I know there are a couple places selling just "bullet" or "cone" caps. Does seem odd no one makes one to fit, as many old Ford, and Dodge, and probably a couple other makes that use the 5 1/2" bolt circle.

I know isnt that weird......if you are familiar with the HAMB then "wheelkid" or somethign liek that made a cool little adapter for the 5.5 pattern. People said they were interested so not sure if he did it or not. Im sure he could make some money from it.

I plan to paint my truck blue and white in the future. So I painted my rims the blue I am going with. the new paint on the wheels looks good with the PATINA I have now on the truck and will still look good when I get it in satin black primer ready for paint.
RED is over done and every yahoo paints his wheels red and calls it a rat rod or whatever, just over done and over seen.
Paint it to match or contrast your final color.
