I want to change out the stock 4 speed for a C-6 Auto.
I found a C-6 long shaft for a good price, but I don't know if this will work for me? I came off a 390. My truck has a 352 FE. will I need to change transmision mounts/cross member? and can I used the existing driveline?
Any help would be greatly appreciated....Thank you.

Did you hear about the cannibal that passed his brother in the woods?
Actually, he will need a shorter driveshaft. the C6 is much longer than a stock 4 speed. Hawkrod36truck wrote:from Michigan. You might need to modify the cross member. You will need a longer driveshaft. You'll need a kick down rod to work the passing gear. Along with the carb from an automatic or at least the linkage for it.
Hawkrod is correct. Shorter driveshaft with the longer tranny tailshaft. I have a C6 with the short tailshaft. Can anyone tell me the difference in the long/short tailshafts. What they come in originally, years, etc. I have 2 C6's. One with short which is the one I have been using and I have one that needs rebuilt with the long tail shaft. Thanks in advance.

There are basically 6 different C6 lengths, there is the 4X4 divorced trans which does not have a speedo cable hole, there is the 4X4 mated trans which is open on the back, there is the truck trans which has a short bolt on yoke, there is the short slip yoke trans which was used in most cars and many trucks from 66 on up (which can be ID'ed because it uses a normal mount that was also used on most other Ford trans), there is the long trans with a regular slip yoke which was in many bigger cars like early 70's Tbirds and Lincolns and can be ID'ed by the two seperate rear mounts (one on each side of the tail shaft housing), and finally there is the special long trans used in Lincolns in the late 60's which has a special 3 spline yoke that bolts to the driveshaft (not one of Fords better ideas). There are a couple of other odd special trans out there but they are rare enough that you probably won't trip accross them like 72 police car trans etc... that were only used on a handful of vehicles. C6 Swap
Fairly large project! Think about where the shifter will be. On the tree? Replace the column with one from a truck with shifter on the tree. On the floor? Use an aftermarket floor mounted shifter. C6 for FE will have a round bell housing, 352, 360, and 390 will fit. Easiest is a C6 from a truck. Kick down is available from LoKar as is a new accelerator cable (looks nice as well). Then cooling lines and another radiator or auxillary cooling of some type. Then think about neutral start switches, backup lights and a new driveshaft and transmission mount (isolater) the crossmember support will work. And...you may need to cut rivets to get the front crossmember out or install the engine and transmission as a unit. Those rivets are a real bugger to cut with the engine installed. To review, shifting, driving, cooling, installing and those rivets you will never forget. IMHO!
