Slickmainers (Gregg) 65 project

Post by slickmainer »

I'll start a little thread to show my progress rather than filling up the truck talk area.
It started out life in Sept of 1964, Medium Blue and Wimbledon white, custom cab, 240 1bbl and a manual light duty 3sp on the column, 3:70 rear.
It arrived to me with a 240 1bbl, and an NP435 4sp (reverse is to the right and down)

From what I can find, it was registered in Washington in 2001, then a new title as issued in 2007 in Battle Ground Washington. In June of 2009 it was sold to another guy in Washington. One month later it was on ebay and sold to a guy in Alabama. I bought it in March of 2010.

Yesterday and today I stripped out the old rubber floor mat and what looked to be roofing shingles covering the rusted floor. I ordered some floor pans from flashbackf100's and will be putting them in this week or next.

Also today I took off the oil bath breather and replaced it with an aftermarket paper cleaner. It had a small 2-5/8 neck, and a side set screw that kept it from tilting forward like it was originally set up to do with the oil bath. I had to use the stud that came with this cleaner as the oil bath one was too tall. It sure seemed simple to do, so I hope I did it right. I also replaced the dirty old and broken oil breather cap with an aftermarket one. seems odd to have chrome in the engine bay since that's the only thing clean in there.
Image

I also replaced my headlights since I was missing both low beams. Out with the old Sylvania 6014 and in with two new Sylvania H6024 (halogen - $9.99 at the parts store) I still need to find out why I have really slow blinkers in the front and no turn signal on the drivers rear. (the bulb works (driving light) just doesn't blink).

If you see something I am doing wrong please let me know.

Slickmainer,
Looks like a GREAT truck! :thumright:

Do those halogen headlamps draw more current than the standard OEM-type lamps? :dontknow:
I'm concerned about hour 45+yr old wiring harness getting hot....

Change the bulb in the driver's rear and then re-test your blinkers at all four corners. :2cents:

It had sylvania 6014s in it. the parts store didn't have them so they gave me these H6024. I went home and googled them They look to be the same

http://www.sylvaniaautocatalog.com/sylv ... Number=104

Only difference I see is that the old ones were a 50/60 Low and High.
The halogen ones are a 40/60 low high. The regular 6014's would have been ideal, but they didn't have them.

Got some more cleaning done on the truck. I took off all the door panels, access panels, and foot vent covers, cleaned all the junk out of those. I had two handfuls of mud in down in on of the foot vents. The other side was rusted so most of it just fell down.

Took out the previous owners radio, which saddens me because the truck didn't appear to come with a radio from ford. No radio antenna hole on the cowl, and no speaker hole in the dash between the heater vents. They guy used tape to hold an antenna wire all the way around the windshield. Oh well. the 240 sounds better than any station I could find.

Also cut the bottom of the firewall pad where it was cracked and ratty. I kept most of the upper part in place and just went straight across. I'll use the peel and seal or some other type of flooring base once the floor pans are in.

Next up is to sand down the lower white part of the dash and give it a little paint, and work on the E-brake, drum brakes, and swap to a dual master with a drum/drum set up. Drums seem to work pretty good so far and for as little driving as I'll be driving

no exciting photos of these steps. :?

Greg - check the rear conenctions under the dash.
There should be two wires coimng out of your steering column that go to a gray plug, Check tha the male pins are contacting the female pins. I pulled my gray connector apart and the tab to seat the wires was not holding. I bent the tabs back and reseated the conenctors.

more headaches today. brakes are pretty much shot. need all new cylinders, hoses, shoes and ebrake cables. It's one of those, "while you're there things" where the lines should probably be redone too.

add these to the wiring issues...why does taking it apart seem to be the easiest?

must use patience.

got my new tail light sockets, gaskets, and lenses from DCR. I now have tail lights but no brake lights or turn signals. At least the wiring works to the back, just have to work my way forward!

I think I want black interior. Black will be ok with my current blue paint. Once I get my floors done Im going to make the interior cab black, then just use the chrome to break it up.

Id love to have Katzkin black with a tangerine stitching, then two tone my truck black and tangerine. but i dont know how that would look in real life.

since they are 2002 seats, I can find covers for them at the local store till i get the track repainted then i'll go with the katzkin covers

The black with orange stitching looks awesome. have seen it done around here... and as for the orange and black paint.... google "Harley Davidson trucks", that should give you some idea as to how it will look. a little at a time will get you there. I just want to be driving mine...   Keep us updated....

rewired the tail lights but now one of them is brighter than the other, new bulbs, and new lenses. I'll have to crawl under and see if there is something split off the passenger side that is making it dimmer.

Also my frickin hood keeps coming undone before i hit 30mph. how do you adjust this? after I slam it shut i can't lift it up, but then bang a few times on the front of the hood and it unlatches.

took the dash bezel out to have a look around, pretty dirty back there.

Does anyone know what kind of bulb goes in the ALT light socket? Mine was missing and I don't know the number

yeah thats the idea. all the parts are going in the bed for now. Im going to be taking the front off to have a better look at the core support and if needed, I'll convert that 62 core that I got. i plan on leaving the engine and tranny in but de gunking them and see if i can paint the firefall with the engine in there. well see, might just end up looking like crap.
