Ford 8n

Just bought another toy, 49 Ford 8n. The hydraulics won't left more than 3 inch's, is it due a rebuild? I know someone out there knows these things inside out.

I think so. My boss at the airport did his about 6 months ago (he's got a 1954 NAA). Bought a rebuild kit and had a good book on it. Said it was fairly easy.

almost sounds like it's low on fluid. i can't remember if those run off the trans fluid or not, but i think they do.

Could be the lift piston worn. I had a 8N about 30 years ago but had to let it go because of money issues (two kids, house payments etc.) I would like to find another prices on them are all over the place. these guys can provide info

Yep, that is an 8N. the easy way to tell an 8 from a 9 or 2N is by the back wheels. rhe 8s have the small bolt center studs where a 9N and 2Ns have a much larger bolt center. Also the 8s have a 4 speed trans while the older models have a 3 speed

I have been wanting an 8 or 9 N or a Jubilee for a long time and just putting it off, I guess I am going to have to jump off the deep end and buy one, so I can haul it to the cars shows. I do attend a tractor and truck show every year in Temple Texas.

don't get a 9n. those front distributors suck. i don't know if it was an early/late change over thing or if they all had them, but the fan likes to eat plug wires.

Early 8Ns had the front distribitor too made it a pain to install or set points. Pertronixs has a fix for that! Your right if the plug wires weren't properly routed and secured the fan would eat them!

The later 8N's had the side mount distributor. Not sure when they changed. My neighbor has a late '52 8N with the side mount dist (the last year for the 8N) and my son-in law has a real early 48 (first year) with the front mount.
My neighbor installed a 6 volt Pertronix in his 8N a couple years back. Starts first time, every time. It did with the points, also.
Sure are a lot of differences for being all the same.

I'll try and post some pictures. The lift just started working, I think I had the top piovt poit in a bind. It's not smooth but it does lift now.

I need to invest in a new alterantor kit, as soon as finances permit

there was a company in Coffeyville Ks. that made a V-8 conversion....
started back in the .... 1950s ?
it was the FUNK conversion... could put a flathead Ford in them

knew a guy that had one , never saw it run though

Now that's cool. I happen to know where there are a couple of Flatheads lying around. You almost have to look twice that the V-8's in there.

I saw a V8 conversion at the Spokane Washington Swap Meet a couple years back. Something didn't look quite right. After a second look, I saw it was a V8-60, the baby flathead. It was a very clean looking conversion,
