Hood Ornament

Post by DavidNevada »

I just got my truck last week. It has this crazy hood ornament that looks like it was made specifically for this hood. Anyone seen one before? It wasn't made by Ford was it?

Don't know what it came off of, but if I had to guess I would start with Oldsmobile, forties or early fifties?

You just can't keep a good woman down. I just Googled 1950 Oldsmobile and guess what I came up with? You guessed it, the hood ornament for a 1950 Oldsmobile Futuramic 88. Mystery solved.

Good call, I was looking at your pics earlier and noted how well it fit the contour of the hood, I personally wouldnt keep it on there but for an added piece sure fit well! Nice looking truck by the way!

Hood Ornament

Post by Truckrat »

Well I for one like it on there, but that's just the 50s coming out in me. If I ever run across one of those I just might put one on mine. Kind of doubles as a handle to open and close a hood. The PO of your truck must've gone thru several of those old hood ornaments before he found one that fits that well. Haven't seen anyone else's trucks with one of those, so yours is unique.
By the way, :welcome: from Oklahoma!

I like it too. You couldn't ask for a better fit. If you don't want it, let me know, I will take it.

I'll leave it on until I start prepping it for paint. Since I love the idea of "stock," it won't go back on after that. But that is likely a couple of years away. Michelle, the prize is yours since you ID'd it!

I just noticed the credit goes to Carl for the first ID - Michelle found the first accurate picture. Sorry for the oversight, Carl.

Michelle, you'll notice this ornament has one or two of the rear rocket fins broken off. You could easily even it up by shortening the others, but it might not look as cool. I'll let you know when I pull it off.
