Any suggestions on a stereo head unit that fits the original hole in the dash of a 64? Most of what I am finding is either too tall or too long. I can change the size of the opening but prefer not.
Thanks,
Jay

Re: stereo to fit
How about using a block off plate over the radio hole and then getting one of the CustomAutoSound "stealth" radios that can be mounted just about anywhere, like under or behind the seat?64shortie wrote:Any suggestions on a stereo head unit that fits the original hole in the dash of a 64? the original hole?
there was not such a thing.
if you had a factory radio there were small holes in the dash for the 2 control buttons and light bulb.
any rectangular holes in the dash ("garage doors") for later radios were done by an owner.
factory radio holes

garage door (should be illegal)

Just got my LMC catalog they advertise a stereo that will fit the stock dash holes on your truck. Mines cut out a little too I plan on welding in and repairing the mess someone left.

If I ever find the guy who cut my dash to install a Sparkomatic radio, it won't be pretty.
How about an under-dash solution? There's miles of room there, and you can buy some installation panels intended for boats that will hold a standard DIN radio. Beats having to look over your shoulder all the time for someone like me when you sell your truck someday.

Mine was hacked pretty good when I got it too.
But I took my little air grinder and a cutting disk, trimmed it out, and put a modern radio in the hole.
I like the way it turned out.
But my truck isn't a restoration.
BroncoTom found an original radio and put it in place in the dash, then put a new radio under the seat.
Looked stock, sounded good.

I'm not arguing with you. I'm just explaining why I'm right.
Pardon me. Does your deaug bite?

Hmmmm, some interesting comments here. Actually, my dash isn't a mess. Whomever cut the opening did a very neat job. I have purchased a very nice head unit to fit the non-stock opening in my dash and will be installing it this weekend. As this isn't a concourse restoration and is meant to be a nice and fun cruiser I'm not too concerned about keeping the dash bone stock. I am installing four 6x9 speakers too. One in each door and two in the headliner above the back of the seat. The interior is rapidly becoming much nicer and comfy than stock ayway. Selling the truck is not a concern as I have no plans of that. It will only change hands when I am too old and rickety to keep it or too dead and then it will go to my grandson. He is 8 years old now and already has laid claim to the truck and I'm betting he would want the newer stereo too.. Thanks for the ideas.
