I love my 390 in my '63. I can never get a decent mpg calculated though, because all the freeway time I get always hits rush hour in Phoenix and idles for 50 miles, and screws up the numbers. The last time I calculated from one of those trips, I got anout 7.
7?!? crap... I hope it really gets better than that!!!
Skip..... What setup do you have to get 15? that's incredible.
Which Motor???

The 351w in my shorty gets 15 Imperial MPG on a good day. An imperial gallon is 20% larger than a US one, so that's roughly 12.5 US MPG.
I am currently trying to improve this by installing a 4 BBl that has smaller primarys that the current 2BBl carb. Keeping my foot out of it will be easy, I will simply have to say to my Scottish brain.. there went $10!
The 302 in my '78 F100 LWB got an honest and consistent 20 MPG, with a C4 automatic and stock single exhaust.

It's a race.. Will hell freeze over or will JC finish his truck first. Stay tuned..
I have an old, tired, 216,000-mile 5.0 with EFI, backed by an AOD. It's in an '87 Grand Marquis, and it just turned out 26 imperial miles-per-gallon (22 US mpg) on a 6-hour trip last weekend. That was at about 70 mph too. It blew out 1-1/2 quarts of oil in the process, but all in all not too bad.
Of course a Slick experiences greater aerodynamic drag, which makes a significant difference, but I'd say there's decent potential with a fuel-injected 5.0.

grumpy is my old work truck he has worn out leaf sprngs and coils hes a 1978 F150 short bed 4x4 dad bought it new and its well over 500k now we had a 351m in it and about 6 years ago it got a fresh 400m actually its a 406 if ya want to get technical, truck hasnt ever failed emissions and still the original 2bbl carb on it I get average 12 mpg city use hauling heavy loads from tearing out carpet and tile in houses to the dump ( which is what he does for a living) my 06 f 150 xlt isnt much better getting around 15 and its a good 1000 -1500 lbs heavier being a super crew with 6 1/2 foot bed. I honestly think the mileage out of grumpy is due to better tourque from having the 2bbl, I know it could be improved with 4bbl with smaller secondaries and also know id be driving around with my foot all the way down too
