A couple questions...

Post by f100matt »

#1

The new gauge cluster I am putting in my truck has a oil pressure gauge and an ammeter, where as my old one did not. I know the oil pressure gauge has one wire to the sending unit and the other to a ground, but I am not sure where to wire the ammeter to? I am assuming one wire goes to ground and the other somewhere on the alternator??

#2

Where is the best place to get a new speedo cable? I bought one from LMC for my 66' 4 speed but it does not look right at all. I think its the wrong one, but just in case I am missing something here a couple pictures of what they sent me.

Transmission end.. Doesn't appear to be any way to attach the speedo gear.....

Yeah, those are later cables. The other issue is guage wiring. There are two terminals on a gauge. Except for ammeters, one goes to power (the IVR) and the other goes to the sender. The ammeter goes inline which means you disconect the main power wire from the battery source and it then goes to the ammeter. Then another wire goes from teh ammeter back to where you took off the power source wire. If the gauge reads backwards switch the wires on the back of the ammeter. It is important to note that no gauge wires go directly to ground and that they ground through the sender and the ammeter wires cannot be grounded at all (well they can but then you will let all the smoke out of the wires and gauge and it is so hard to get it back in! LOL). Hawkrod

Guess I will send it back and find the correct one, I always hate buying things from LMC because of the problems I have had in the past, thought maybe I could push my luck, guess I just don't learn..

sorry, dont really want to start an argument but
the plastic clip is on there to keep the end on the speedometer, it cannot be removed without breaking the plastic, this was done to make rolling back the mileage more difficult.
the cable you bought is for 1973 and up trucks with certain manual transmissions and or transfer case.

check these out. not exactly the same as your pic but the bottom one proves my point.

Ice, you are mistaken about the plastic ends on the speedo cable. They are not made to make rolling a speedo back harder and they are very easy to remove. They are actually a spring clip and to remove them all you have to do is push them to one side and they release. That is why Ford started using them, they make assembly and disassembly much faster and easier. Hawkrod

so i guess 2 people learned something today but i never was able to get one of those plastic ends off without it breaking. could be they were old and brittle but either way glad you set the record straight.
