Wow I always forget how lucky we are out here in the west as far as rust goes. Noley then I see a pic of your teardown. I dont feel to bad. Lots of dirt to remove but not to much rust. Can still see a little factory black paint on the frame.

Not trying to steal the thread. Just amazed at the amount work you guys have to do in the rust belt. Hang in there.

No worries, every time I tear something down I find rust but nothing too much that it can't be repaired. The good news I suppose is that it's all surface rust on the frame and the cab mounts turned out to be in over all good shape. Just a few repairs and I'm good to go. This truck had an oil leak on the driver side and it went all the way to the back sort of preserving the frame from rust.

Made a cart for it out of my old grill.

I have my electrician neighbor coming over tonight to run me a dedicated circuit. Should be up and running by tonight. Can't wait to test this baby out.

Nice welder. I have a 180 and it has given me excellent service. Make sure your weld area is clean and do not use brake cleaner for cleaning the metal it is highly toxic when mixed with MIG welding. Also be very careful not to overheat or over work the metal.

You are correct Kenny on the brake clean, I have heard stories!

This will be my second MiG in 8 years. The previous one was a 120 and it was great for building my son's go kart. Just wanted to make sure this time I had one that would do whatever I wanted it too. I'm working on a separate project that will require some aluminum welding so I will need to get a spool gun eventually.

On another note, my father called me to inform me that he had possession of my drive train. Man I am pumped!!! Just need to figure out what gears to run with the 5 speed.

Nice cart for the welder. Are you going to run gas with that welder? If so looks like you could mod the cart to carry a tank too. Still looking for a welder and saving for one. Every one Ive talked to says you should use gas makes the welding easyer. Nice looking unit. Ive been pricing them on ebay.

I will be running gas when I'm welding inside the garage. It's tough to weld with it when there is a draft. As for the tank I will run two 30 cubic ft tanks (21" tall) that will fit under the top of the cart. Didn't get the wiring done last night so it will be next week before I do anything else. I'm on a 9 day stretch at work so not much progress on the truck upcoming.

Roller 5.0 is an excellent choice for these trucks.
Pass side cab mount looks like it will need a little patch - WAY better than we see here though.

It's been a while since I've updated my thread so here it goes.

My father has the crank, block, and all other essential parts ready for assembly. I'm heading down this weekend to do some porting on the heads and intake. Just matching the ports mostly but will clean up the valve openings for max air.

May even get the long block together while I'm there.

Another thing we are going to work on is fabbing a lift to get the body off the frame. I have a rough sketch of it drawn up and will post if it actually works like I think it will. It will be one for the backyard mechanic like myself.

I will take some pics of the engine and post over the weekend.

What are the gears for your 5 speed? What tires are you going to run? What is the RPM Range you want to be in when in OD?

I can make you are nice custom chart like this:

Got the bottom end of the engine done last month but never thought to take pictures. Should have the engine finalized by December.

Got the rear end apart a couple of weeks ago as well and am in search for a posi chunk and axles.

This thing is going to be a little monster when it's all done.

Went down to a swap meet in Moultrie, Ga. this past Saturday. Picked up the last two pieces for the engine. Got a new in the box Pro Comp high rise intake for $145 and a set of new chrome shorty fat tube headers for $85. Didn't really want chrome but for the price I couldn't pass it up. Also got new tail light lenses for $15. I wish I could have spent all three days there although my wife disagrees. There was soooo much to see... and buy!

Got some stuff done over the Holiday weekend.

Picked this tail section up from Chris (Dragginwagon) thanks a ton! Man what a time saver vs. all of the sheet metal work that was needed.
Image

The cancer was pretty bad on both sides.

Cut the spot welds out to make it easier for the install.
Image

The section came off relatively easy, much easier than expected. Only used up two cutters. Welded up the seems for a smooth look.

Got the door on temporarily. I can use the skin from the old door to repair the right bed side.

Had some time yesterday to get the pass side cancer patched. I took the donor panel from the old door, thanks for the tip Greg D.

I Just have it tacked in for now but will get it welded in permanently later this week. I have to say that all of this metal work is quite interesting. I have never done any body work like this before so it is time consuming as I am not confident yet but still fun.

Didn't think to get a before pic but here is one from when I got the truck.

Looking good. I'm definitely not looking forward to ripping into the rust on mine.

If you start checking the cost to refill a cylinder, you will find that a cylinder with double the volume (eg: 122 cf vs 244 cf) is a LONG ways from being double the cost, so always buy the biggest cylinder your budget allows, as the payback in the savings on content won't take long to pay for the added expenditure for the larger cylinder.
