just because i wired it the same way it was on the parts truck i took it from.
its a motorola alt with a external sealed regulator, took it off a 292 a few years ago and after recently killing my generator i got it out of the box and decided to use it. since i removed the harness intact i simply switched the wires with mine.
problem is not with the charging but with the light coming on when i turn off the key.
why?
because now it has 2 regulators and the light is getting feedback thru the original one left from the generator.
did some research and going to take the original one out and add an ammeter, that should fix it.
moral:
just because you install something the same way you take it apart it may not be right because the original installer did not read the directions and properly install.

Re: messed up my alternator conversion
I had a similar problem with a red plate motorola alt. The warning light would come on with the battery connected when the key was not in run.
Light went out with the key in run. Alt would not charge because it needed the inital current from the warning light bulb to begin charging.
Turned out the diodes in the red isolation plate had failed in a "closed" state.

Re: messed up my alternator conversion
no as the motorola regulator is hardwiredTXSlick wrote:This is for Mustang. Would it help any?
i fixed it today, took out the unnecessary original regulator, added a junction block and the wiring harness from a slick with the outer round alt/oil gauges and an s/w ammeter. dont really like the ammeter below the dash but will have to live with it for a while.
does keep my battery charged even running all my extra lights which upon thinking about it is what kept doing in the generators
