Very interesting...but good luck finding a lantern battery in the $5-6 range. Think the cheapest one I could find recently was about $12.

Wow! That's a great price (even for a small number). I'll have to "bulk up" :-)

I don't really plan on trying it, but do appreciate the source for some great prices on the lantern batteries.

Well, if this isn't true I do have another suggestion, lol.

I prefer NiMH (nickel metal hydride) rechargeables to the single-use alkalines or lithium ion batteries, so I invested in a bunch of these along with one of their high-end chargers: http://www.mahaenergy.com/store/viewIte ... roduct=415

The initial outlay is obviously much higher but the extra performance is worth it, IMO. NiMH batteries have a lower rated voltage (often 1.2V instead of 1.5V) but have much less internal resistance than single-use alkalines. That means their able to supply more consistent power even as their voltage drops. I use them in my camera flashes exclusively and have found they last much longer.

There are also lower-cost alternatives such as the Rayovac ones available at WalMart that work just fine in less demanding applications.

Plus I hate tossing out used batteries because I don't want them in the landfill, but safely disposing of them can be a major pain. Places like home improvement stores and such have collection boxes but it's rare that I remember to bring the spent batteries along with me!

before you go cashing in the retirement fund on 6V batteries to sell AA's to the kiddies at the mall... You might want to look at the name of the site being refered to... and its not even April 1st

Me too, but I had a hell of a time finding rechargable lantern batteries to extract them from, and I have to tape them back together to recharge them
